Hypes 3011 West 5th Street Greeley, CO 80634-5522 RE: Maintenance of U.S. Highway 85 Dear Mr. Hypes: Thank you for recently bringing to my attention the current state of U.S. Highway 85 in Weld County. Weld County has no jurisdiction over any Colorado State, U.S., or Interstate Highway. However, we (Public Works Department) have heard for two years that CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) has plans to rebuild that particular section of U.S. Highway 85, from Ault to Weld County Road 100 at Nunn. We were under the impression that the scope of work was lowered to an asphalt overlay, and most recently, motorists were alerted by the CDOT message board at the north end of Ault that a chip seal project was imminent. There has, however, been no sign of any type of road improvement to that or any section of U.S. Highway 85 from Greeley to Rockport other than normal asphalt patching to date. Citizens and motorists, including myself, who use that road on a daily basis are as concerned as you about the worsening condition of the road surface. Citizen inquiries should be made to Myron Hora at CDOT Region 4 Headquarters at (970) 350-2263. If you have questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at (970) 304-6496, Extension 3761. Box 759 Greeley,CO,80632 WELD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Dear Ms. Kirkmeyer: In June we went to southern Idaho, including Boise, to visit relatives, do genealogical research, and visit Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, a total of 2,307 miles. Travel on freeways 80, 84, 86, and 15 equaled 825 miles. Secondary highway travel included highways 85, 30, 21, 26, 191, 89, 287, 189, 28, 20, 220, and 487. Those totaled 1,482 miles. With only one exception, we found all the freeways and all the secondary roads to be in excellent condition, without chuckholes, without large cracks, and not rough due to repairs. The one exception was Highway 85 in Weld County between Greeley and Rockport. In the southbound lane between Rockport and Nunn 27 holes; between Nunn and Pierce 64 holes, large cracks, rough road; Pierce to Ault 49 holes, cracks, rough road; Ault to Eaton 51 holes, large cracks, very rough road; Eaton to Lucerne 38 holes; Lucerne to O Street at Greeley 45 holes. Total: 274 holes and cracks in 32 miles in the south bound lanes. When we left Greeley we went north on Highway 85 and found many holes. It was actually dangerous to drive on 85 because we were constantly trying to avoid hitting holes that could ruin our tires, damage our suspension, or force our wheels out of alignment. We have not counted all the holes in the northbound lanes, but we believe there are as many hazardous holes and cracks as there are in the southbound lane. If so, that would total 548 holes and large cracks in Highway 85 between O Street and Rockport. Fact: O Street north to Eaton 77 holes and cracks. Please also consider the danger when these holes are filled with ice. Why are the secondary roads in Idaho and Wyoming in perfect condition and Weld's Highway 85 in such poor condition? Is there a plan to repair this highway? Sincerely, R /-fyiain_ George P. Hvoes 3011 West 5th Street Greeley,Co,80634-5522 1-970-352-2065 U.S. Postal Service', 10-2 CERTIFIED MAIL.
