Greeley,CO 80632 COMMISSIONERS
Dear Mr. Freeman, Commissioner
I am writing you because I am very concerned about fracking in my hometown Greeley,CO.
I strongly believe there should be more rules and regulations that the oil and gas industry
should be obligated to follow.
Fracking is responsible for more than half of Weld County's revenues but it is also
responsible for contamination and earthquakes.According to the Huffington Post, in 2013
Colorado had a reported 495 chemical spills, 22 percent of this spills contaminated water.
The Greeley Tribune reported that on May 31,2014 Greeley had an earthquake with a
magnitude of 3.4 with several aftershocks of magnitude 2.0 and 1.4.
The fracking process itself is not harmful, however surface spills and poor drilling
processes cause the contamination and earthquakes. Regulations should be in placed so
that fracking sites are located a safe distance to where surface spills don't have a major
negative impact. Also, regulations insuring that the fracking process is running smoothly.
This can be done with consecutive checking of equipment to insure that it is properly
functioning.
By putting regulations to insure the fracking process runs smoothly, the amount of
contamination and earthquakes will diminish greatly and Weld County's economy would
still be able to flourish. Therefore, I urge to reconsider your stance on fracking.
I appreciate your time you took in reading my letter and considering the issue.
