Weld County Commissioner Doug Rademacher's willingness to champion projects lends
credibility and support that we might not otherwise have gotten from some locals wary of the
federal government. An example is the sale/disposition of the Sligo Cemetery to a small
local town of 200 people without the financial resources to pay for the administrative costs
and land value. Doug, along with other county commissioners, attended a meeting,
alongside the FS to show his support. He also reached out to corporations to raise money
to cover the costs of this transaction. Another example is the proposed Baker Draw
Shooting area on the PNG. Although grants will cover the actual shooting area
construction, additional funding was needed for an all-weather, year round access road.
This one mile access road was completed in December 2012, due to Doug's ability to
acquire donations from three corporations, in addition to committing the county to provide
gravel, an engineer to draft the road design, equipment and labor. The $61,000 road was
completed at no cost to the FS, and included innovative cattle guard style drains instead of
culverts, that will allow over road drainage during severe rain events and for easier
maintenance.
Commissioner Rademacher has been a part of the PNG shooting round table group since it
began over two years ago. He's been an integral member, able to use his influence and
position to authorize attendance and involvement by the Sheriffs Department (for law
enforcement coordination and support, obtaining law enforcement incident information) and
GIS support (for mapping exercises showing adjacent private residences in relation to the
PNG). This information and support has helped move the group into a community based
grass roots organization and make solution based recommendations on issues related to
shooting. These include safety of adjacent landowners, visitors, our employees, permittees,
etc. along with resource issues of vandalism and trash. Outputs from this group have
included handing out wallet size law enforcement contact cards to shooters, gathering a
mailing list of local gun stores to send shooting information and regulations to for them to
distribute, improved awareness and coordination between County and FS law enforcement,
and increased local buy in and trust for the shooting area to be constructed this summer.
Commissioner Rademacher commits time to monthly meetings with the Pawnee NG District
Ranger, in order to improve communication and understanding of PNG issues he'd been
hearing about from his constituents, including a home rule group. These meetings have
resulted in improved collaboration and partnership between the county and the FS, while
allowing him to be responsive to his constituents. He has been able to educate them on
some of our laws and regulations, or he'll direct individuals to contact us directly. He also
brings in other county commissioners and officials as the discussion warrants, such as the
county attorney, public works department, public affairs officer.
Grassland management will always include aspects not always understood or supported by
all members of the public or local officials. However, good communication, a forum to
explain rationale, and a solid relationship to weather differences and continue working
together, is due to Commissioner Rademacher's strong leadership as Chairman and
Commissioner.
