Re: Weld County Road safety
Weld County has been most fortunate with the growth and contributions that the oil and gas
industry has provided. We applaud them when companies step up to the plate and aid us in time
of crisis.
They contribute to the local tax base which goes to schools and our infrastructure. They
demonstrate social responsibility by underwriting many major events in our communities. The
industry has created thousands of jobs which provide income for area businesses while
increasing the sales and property tax revenues.
Companies spend a great deal of revenue to do business in Colorado and here in Weld County.
They are scrutinized by other industries that have a lesser standard of governance over how
business should be run. Then they have to spend money on advertising and manpower to defend
their safe standards of operations.
The June 22, 2014, Sunday Greeley Tribune posted an article on how towns deal with the
industry.
An excerpt from the article is as follows:
"Town officials along the oil corridors are practically begging the state Department of
Transportation and Weld County for a little help. Weld County officials have been reticent to
pave many new roads for fear of longtime maintenance, townspeople say.
"US 85 is really catching it right now, "said Carsten of the chewed up drag through Eaton.
"We just put a lot of money into rebuilding Collins Avenue, which is the main east-west road
That's helped a lot, so we're back into regular maintenance on residential streets. The streets
are still the main thing that concerns me. Most cities and towns in Colorado will tell you same
thing "
School buses in Grover also are feeling the wear and tear, us windows are cracked and parts
come loose. "
Schools (such as Pawnee)should not have to drive 20 extra miles to avoid bad roads. That costs
the school districts more money. The non-serviced roads provide unsafe conditions for the
drivers and students,

Emergency service providers for this area should also be concerned regarding the negative effect
on response time and their safety.
These companies located in our area with the intention of producing resources so they are
available can't
for a long time. Why can t the county reciprocate by regularly maintaining our roads
for those that are providing jobs which in turn provides revenue to area businesses?
What was failed to be mentioned is how the county road and transportation department plan to
keep up the roads so traveling to where the revenue is generated will be safe for anyone going
down these roads.
Take the time to travel county roads 100, 103, 104, 105, 1 10, 111, 1 16,122, 127 and 129. They
are dangerous!
There is a road maintainer station in Keota that could be one to service these roads by grading
them regularly to help with the conditions. Often when one travels by this location, there is a
maintainer just sitting idle. The roads need to be worked.
Weld residents have requested that the oil and gas industry be safe but are we giving them the
safety they need to produce?
Ruts and bad road conditions for the family sedan, the ranch and farm equipment, the work
vehicles and heavy oil and gas equipment are unsafe. These roads tear up the vehicles which then
cost the companies, school districts and residents more money for maintenance. You can see this
along the roads by the mud flaps, fender liners, tires, etc. that have been torn off due to the
conditions.
Some of the attitude is they are big business they should pay for it...they do!
The county should help all of the area residents and businesses by upkeep on these roads so we
can keep the jobs in our area, revenue for our county and safety for all of those who travel our
county and state roads.
Weld County: Please regularly maintain the well traveled roads.
Thank you,
Brad Boehm
