Grant Adjustment Notification for 201 l-DD-BX-0017
Dear Kathy Mason:
Weld County was the recipient of the 2011 Congressional Select Award: 2011-DD-BX-0017 which has an
approximate unobligated balance of$87,000.
FORMAL REQUEST: The Weld County Commissioners and Weld County Sheriff's Office(and the other 5
participating agencies who will be participants in the lab)are requesting a no cost extension of 3 months on the
2011-DD-BX-0017 Congressional Select Award. The new projected end date would be September 30,2014.
The details on why we are seeking this extension are noted below.
We began the move into the new lab facility in August,2013,and as a result of the funds provided through this
grant we were able to purchase many items that helped in providing forensic lab services to the region. One
area that we have not yet fully set up is the forensic biology unit of the lab. The examiner we hired is in
training and we are waiting for her training to be completed before making the final purchase for that section.
The last training review indicated that the analyst was about 1.5 to 2 months away from completing her
training. Once done we will begin to process of purchasing the equipment requested.
In addition, as a result of the bid process, we were able to save on some items and have residual funds with
which we would seek to purchase additional items needed for the lab to provide services to the region. A
budget modification will be forthcoming with a detailed summation of the funds spent and the request for
additional items to spend down the remaining funds and optimize the dollars provided to this lab to become
self sustaining in the future.
During the ten months we have been in operation at this site, we have seen many positive results. We have
begun to serve a larger number of agencies because of the location and ease of access for the agencies. We
have added a second firearms examiner and a part-time computer forensic examiner to our analytical staff.
Finally, because of our affiliation with the CBI and the quality system they provide, we are part of the ISO
17025 accreditation application.
