In response to the Application Review Notification Card received over this past weekend,we wish to express our views on the Proposed Project. First of all,the idea of it being a Proposed Project is rather redundant since they have been doing business in this residential/agricultural development for the past two or more years without any consideration to their neighbors. The neighbors were never notified of their intent to begin operation of the business. The noise, the sight of the rail boxcars and military tents is beyond what a residential area should have to deal with. Our property abuts their property on their west side. There is nothing to muffle the sounds and sights of this business. It is not conducive to a residential neighborhood. We purchased this property for the openness and tranquility of owning a small farm. I welcome you to come out some weekend and experience our not so tranquil life as it is now. There is constant machine gun firing, a blaring siren, instructions being given on a loud speaker and yelling from the participants. There is no relief from the noise, whether our windows are open or closed. When the windows are open, which is most of the time during the summer and on warm days during the spring and fall, I can hear the instructions being given as though the person were standing beside me. With the constant gunfire, I feel like I'm living in a war zone without the bombings. Now that I've expressed some of my feelings, I'd like to address Mr.Trevathan's submittal to your office. EXHIBIT 1 -1- First, pertaining to the Weld County Code referring property owners to own and use their property as long as it protects the community health, safety and welfare, what about the safety of my family on my property. We find the projectiles that are fired from these rifles on our property. I have grandchildren that visit who could be injured from these projectiles. What about the foul language that is used. It is not something that I want my 3, 10, 13 or 15 year old grand children to hear and it is offensive to myself. The next paragraph talks about fostering the County's agricultural, business and mining. That's fine but this is not the type of business that mixes with a residential community. Mr.Trevathan seems to forget that there may be some fields abutting his grandfather's property but there are homes on those properties and there is not 10 acres separating their battlefields from the homes. The two do not mix. Then Mr.Trevathan talks about the hours they operate. He forgot to mention that during the summer they have sessions on Sunday evenings that last until midnight. A couple of paragraphs later, Mr.Trevathan brings up their potential growth. I have several points to make on this issue. If they plan to have a customer base of 200-250 people in 3 to 5 years, there will be growth as far as the playing field is concerned. Can the 10 acres sustain that kind of growth? There will be more noise—how much more are the neighbors expected to put up with. Right now there are 12 rail boxcars that we get to view every day—how many more will be placed on the property. It looks like a rail yard as it is. Traffic is definitely an issue. County Road 7 is a two lane, no passing, country road without a shoulder. On weekends, there have been times when I was driving down the road only to find stopped traffic blocking the road because there was congestion of cars entering and exiting the property. For a business with the volume that they have,County Road 7 should be widened to accommodate the traffic going to and from the property as business is now. What will it be like in 3 to 5 years as they grow? The business mentioned in the next paragraph of the proposal does not have customer traffic going to and from the property. So the fact that there is another business is irrelevant. Mr.Trevathan then goes on talking about the VACANT fields surrounding his grandfathers' property. As I mentioned before, there are homes on the edges of those fields. And,there are more homes than he stated in his proposal. We are perhaps 150'feet directly west of the battlefield. To the north, there are two homes, not one. Yes,there is a business but also a home which sits closer to the Favela property than the business does. There is another house bordering the field to the west of the Favela property and another to the south which sits on the south side of that property's field. And there are many more homes that will be affected. These are not just vacant lots. As a matter of fact, according to the list of addresses given, there are 8 homes within 200'of their property and 22 homes within a 2 miles of them. The only vacant field is to their East which is farm land. Getting back to the rail boxcars. It was mentioned how expense it would be to remove them should the proposal not be granted. Perhaps, Mr.Trevathan should have gone through this process before moving the boxcars on the property. As for the signatures, my guess is that there are fewer than 5%of those signatures whose parents actually pay taxes is Weld County. A good number of the signatures are those of children. We homeowner's have a lot at risk here. This could greatly affect our property values not to mention our lives. The ideal spot for this business would be on the east side of I-25 next door to the race track. There are no homes and a lot of VACANT fields not to mention potential business from the racing fans. We have spoken to three of our neighbors, two of which have not received cards notifying them of the proposal. In all fairness to all the neighbors, they should all be notified. If there is any consideration to granting this proposal, I hope that the neighbors of this community will be taken into consideration. Since we have a lot of working and retired folks, I hope that if there is a hearing, that you will consider having a meeting locally and in the evening so those who can may attend. When my son first asked to go to GoAirheads, as a parent, I admit, I was hesitant. He asked off and on for many months and I finally decided to check it out. I must say,my concerns were put to rest the first time I checked him in. Upon meeting Dianna and Dave I instantly knew that this was a safe place, rules were clear and enforced, safety equipment was required, and the kids had a respect for Dianna that I was pleased to see. In talking with my son after his day of air-softing,he explained that there were referees on the field at all times closely monitoring language, sportsmanship, safety etc. and that if kids weren't following the rules there were penalties, even eviction from the field if necessary. My son and many of his friends are now regular participants at GoAirheads. My son plays lacrosse in the spring time, and his fall, summer and winter sport is air soft. Air soft is every bit as relevant as any traditional, organized team sport. In addition to physical activity, air soft requires the kids to work together, follow rules, help newer kids learn the game, etc. I work for as a Landscape Architect for a nearby municipality, and I realize that sometimes support for non-residents is not considered as heavily as if I were a resident. I would like to mention that GoAirheads has been the reason I have driven north of my usual range, and I have enjoyed exploring and spending money in Weld County. I'm sure GoAirheads brings others to spend their time and money in the County as well. I'm also happy to support GoAirheads as a family owned business, and I encourage Weld County to do the same. Thank you for your time and consideration. My 15 year old son Mites and many of his boyscout friends are enthusiastic customers of GoAirheads. For the kids a trip to GoAirheads is the highlight of their week. I have been taking the kids to GoAirheads for the past two years and I have never had a single problem. The management and the clientele are top notch and very courteous, respectful, safety minded and responsible. Participating at GoAirheads give the kids outdoor time, exercise, comraderie, and helps them develope a sense of teamwork. It is a great activity and I am thankful that GoAirheads is there for the kids. The impact of the GoAirhead business as an Airsoft playground is far less than existing current uses on surrounding properties. For example the oil and gas industrial infrastructure and installations along with the nearby (smelly) cattle operations, which although allowed are substantially more offensive, environmentally unfriendly and more dangerous than the current GoAirhead usage. I was told that one neighbor is citing loud, offensive language as a reason to close GoAirheads. I can assure you that if this was true, other boy scout parents from Troop 613 and myself would not leave our kids there. I urge you not to shut GoAirheads down as it furnishes good clean healthy fun for the kids with far less impact than many other uses would. Please grant GoAirheads a Special Use Permit or some other method for them to continue their family friendly business. Please include my letter in the public record and copy the county commissioners. Laura To: Chris Gathman Cc: dianna 87Cahotmail.coril Subject: GoAlrheads-Use by Special Review Permit Date: Thursday,August 28,2014 4:53:59 PM Mr. Gathman, I am writing you about the Use by Special Review permit that has been requested by GoAirheads. I support GoAirheads and their endeavors to keep their business open. I would like for you to know of my family's personal experience with GoAirheads and the wonderful family that runs the business. GoAirheads has been great for my twelve year old son, Joren. He entered 6th grade last year and he went from a happy and confident 5th grader to a withdrawn 6th grader. While he was getting through the transition to middle school, his best friend had it worse and suffered panic attacks. His friend found GoAirheads and introduced Joren to the sport of Airsoft. What a change I have seen in my son and his friend over the past year! These two boys are excited and happy now. They talk at length about the sport and their tactics. My initial reaction to my son asking to play Airsoft was a little apprehensive but then I found out how GoAirheads runs their games. They do not tolerate profanity or rule-breaking and have strict safety rules as well as appropriately managing the different age groups. The staff at GoAirheads treat the kids with respect and discipline while allowing for a fun, safe environment. My son gets more physical exercise on the days he attends than during a week's worth of PE and recess at school. He has made new friends and endeavors to earn time and money to go airsofting by keeping up his schoolwork and taking on jobs to earn money. My son also plays basketball but it is a winter sport so the rest of the year, airsofting is his sport of choice and my husband and I support him. Our family enjoys the duplicity of Colorado in which we can head to a museum in downtown Denver or head just miles away to see farms and ranches- and go airsofting. GoAirheads is located close enough to our house that we can frequent the business weekly. We wouldn't be able to do that if we had to go to Wyoming or to a mountain town. I love that this business is run by a caring family whom I trust with my son. I realize that GoAirheads is taking all the necessary steps to comply with property laws. I know they are working out compromises with their neighbors as well to minimize the impact on them. Their efforts should not go unnoticed —including their efforts with the hundreds of pre-teens and teenagers that are provided with a safe, fun, and caring place to enjoy being themselves. Do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions about GoAirheads that you want answered by a parent. Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I have spent many hours at GoAirheads in the past four years and have been employed there for almost a year. I can't say enough great things about the organization, the Trevathan family, and the people I've met at GoAirheads. I beg you to let them stay open. You may have heard that GoAirhead's first rule of play is "No Profanity."When I first heard that, I was in middle school and I didn't totally understand why that was so important. People at my school cussed and it didn't seem like such a big deal. But,after spending time at GoAirheads, I understand why that's so important. We have a lot of young kids who spend many hours at GoAirheads and our staff works hard to make sure it's a safe, healthy environment for every person. We teach respect, both in our words and actions, and reflect high values in all we do. I'm proud of the teenagers I work with and the kids who play at GoAirheads. It's a great group of people! I have learned so much at GoAirheads. I have a lot of friends there and I've met a lot of really great people who I'd never met if I didn't spend time there. I really don't know what I'd do with my time if I didn't get to play and work there. Life would be pretty boring. When I first got interested in airsoft, I played in my neighborhood. But, I couldn't do that much because my parents didn't think it was safe for me to run around with my buddies with an airsoft gun. That's why I was so interested in visiting GoAirheads and why I was hooked after my first time. We stand in strong support of GoAirheads and respectfully implore you and the Weld County Commissioners to support the work of this fine small business. The first time we dropped our son off at GoAirheads to play, we were overjoyed by the Trevathan's first rule: No Profanity. We knew we'd found a great place—that stresses safety above everything else-for our son to run and play and interact with other kids who had similar interests. When we were kids, we roamed the neighborhoods, playing cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, soldiers and 'bad guys." But, as you surely know, there isn't much room in suburbia for boys (and some girls) to safely be part of those long-standing games. Now, our boys spend their days playing video games or sitting in front of a television. As a self-employed Physical Therapist, I know that, as they run around in this safe environment, they're all breathing in fresh air and soaking up the sunshine. (They are exercising without really knowing it!) GoAirheads is the best place in Northern Colorado for these boys to be boys—to interact and socialize and learn and teach and grow from each other and from the great staff that the Trevathan's have assembled. Our son has made friends at GoAirheads, many of whom have become his closest buddies. They have really positive, healthy relationships and we're grateful for this opportunity for him to get to know other teenagers who share his interests. As a staffer, our son has learned how to teach younger children, manage co-workers and interact with an employer who treats him with respect and understanding. We couldn't have asked for a better "first job"for our teenager. Our son wants to go into the military after he graduates from college and we're proud to know that he'll serve our country well. We urge you to continue to support GoAirheads and the work they do to get our kids ready for that type of service. To be perfectly honest, we're not certain what will happen to these boys if GoAirheads is forced out of business. Will they take their games into their neighborhoods, where their actions won't be welcomed by the police? Will they be forced to take their business (and their accompanying dollars) out of Weld County? And, perhaps, even sadder—will they give up their sunshine and exercise to sit in their basements and play on their electronic devices? We implore you to find a solution to the challenges at GoAirheads. We sincerely believe the outcome is very important to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of boys and girls in Northern Colorado. Respectfully, Michael and Stacy Baum 4820 Mountain Gold Run 303/451-5539 stacybaum@comcast.net To:Chris Gathman September 2, 2014 Weld County Department of Planning Services It has recently come to our attention that Go Airheads is still in jeopardy of being forced to close operations? As parents of two 16 year old boys this has us very concerned. As everyone knows, the video gaming industry has created an environment where many kids spend way too many hours "online" playing "virtual"games that lead to physical and emotional health issues. As parents we are always trying to limit their online time and encourage "outdoor" physical activities, especially those that encourage Teamwork and interaction with other LIVE human beings. Honestly, much to our surprise, airsoft competitions, at least the way they are supervised at Go Airheads, has become that vehicle for our son. if they lose access to such a place as Go Airheads, they will return to their sedentary free time in front of a computer screen"pretending"to be engaged in active competitions. When i first met Joshua, Diana, and Dave, I was quite impressed by their"CAMP-Like"operation and even further impressed by their ever-present review of the rules, starting with NO PROFANITY or you will be penalized. For the Trevathan's to take on such responsibility for such a nominal daily admission fee is simply incredible! For many years, my son and his friends enjoyed airsoft battles, but had no safe place to play. Also, many city rules and law enforcement laws make it unsafe for anyone to be running around carrying military gear. The result if they don't have a "designated" place to play will only lead to them playing where unsafe which can bring harm to them and the public. In my visits to Go Airheads, I have spoken with a number of parents, mostly Mothers, who have driven from as far as Arvada and farther, just to bring their kids to Go Airheads.Their comments have been that they too are amazed that for$11 they can have their child doing an outdoor, physical activity they enjoy and are passionate about under proper supervision. They also comment, they just wish they had one closer to where they live. I have also met parents whose children grew up with Go Airheads and have now gone on to College. As a small business owner and full-time bookkeeper,we as Parents have limited financial resources and need economical options for our Teens. I also doubt these Parents from outside Weld County drive all the way back home to turn around and drive back later? They run their errands in Weld County's developing community centers? If anything, Weld County and town of Erie needs more shopping and eating hubs nearby Go Airheads to capture more tax revenues? I sincerely hope the County and Go Airheads ownership are able to collaborate to achieve a mutually acceptable way to keep their doors open? The future of our children is counting on it! It has come to my attention that this wonderful small business might have to cease operations. Our family discovered this terrific establishment and what has become a significant hobby over a year ago. GoAirheads has become a place our family can participate in active and healthy activities instead of sitting around and playing video games or watching TV.There have been several benefits to our Saturdays and occasional weekdays spent under the tents of GoAirheads. I am a parent of boys, and I take the opportunity to stay the entire day and hangout with my kids. I get the chance to see first-hand what GoAirheads is all about. First, my sons spend time with each other and they do not fight.Sounds unbelievable, right? It is true. GoAirheads is about teamwork and developing positive social skills. One of the most fundamental rules on the field is that this is"only a game." Bullying and profanity are not tolerated and patrons are reminded of this every time they come either by the obvious culture or the reading of the rules at the beginning of each day. Players work together during well-thought out and fun games with effective referees in charge.Although I stay each time to watch my kids play, I would have no worries about just dropping them off and spending a day to myself. Second, GoAirheads is a real family business with a real family atmosphere that we definitely appreciate.Josh, Dianna, and Dave are really easy to work with and have helped my kids with unjamming guns and purchasing guns.To me they really enjoy the sport themselves and that love is passed on to their patrons. They are kind to everyone and care about everyone's safety. They enforce the rules and more than once my kids have had to do push-ups for not wearing their safety glasses. It is becoming harder and harder to find a small family business that is succeeding and growing in this economy. Every time we come something new and awesome(my son wanted me to say"awesome") has been added, such as the second field.Josh, Dianna, and Dave all listen to the needs of their patrons and respond positively. Because of this I believe they are invested in the business and in their patrons. That is what keeps us coming back. In conclusion, I want to say that the time our family spends to together at GoAirheads is valuable and positive. As a parent, it is low stress due to the lack of traffic congestion, the easy parking, and its proximity to food establishments. My kids get their hearts pumping while running around the fields playing games in a place that we could not find anywhere else. There are very few airsoft fields around our area.Judging from all the happy, safe people I see participating on the fields, I truly believe in GoAirheads and deeply hope they can continue to open their gates every Saturday. Goairheads is a great environment for kids, and adults also, it provides opportunities to make new friends and to have a great time while doing so. Kids will have a reason to go outside on weekends during fall and winter, instead of playing video games and watching tv all day. What I like most about Goairheads is it is mostly a Christian environment, the number one rule is no cussing. If you do happen to cuss, you'll have to do pushups (ten for every word). They keep safety in the front of their minds, magazines out when across a certain point, and goggles on when in battle zone, if you happen to break these simple rules you will be doing ten more pushups. I have been airsofting for about eight years and have been coming to this field since before its creation as proper business, when it was my friends playing in their backyard. Now it is one of the best airsoft fields in the state for its cleanliness in all manners, from the lack of litter and trash on the field, and the lack of hazards the field itself. The professionalism of the staff, from the uniforms, to the matter in with they handle all problem or complaints. All businesses have rules to keep a healthy and safe environment for the people who play there. I must say that the rule set at Goairheads is outstanding! Other fields, I have found can be very scary or bullying in getting you in to following the rules with harsh shouting and swearing, very unprofessional. Not so with Goairheads, I've never felt threatened or bullied for having to follow what are easy and safe rules. First rule of Goairheads is"No Profanity"no swearing of any kind. Staff members, players, parents, and all other are held to this rule. The penalty for breaking the rules is an increase in pushups from ten to twenty. But the last one rarely happens. Other safety rules include; protective masks on, and covering your all time when on the field. No shooting the animal that also live on the field, "Mag-out", when you reenter the safety area, take your mag out of your gun, clear the gun of extra bb's, put your gun on safe, and hands off the trigger. We treat all these gun as live gun, and don't give people reasons to think they might be hurt in the safety area. Player, staff, and parents follow all these rules and even other player will help remind other about the rule set. As I previously stated I have been coming to Goairheads before its creation as a full business, and before then I had to park ether in the driveway of the house or on the road outside the house. I am very please that they have taken the time and expense to build a parking lot for thirty cars. Many players carpool with friends so there are not normally that many cars on the lot at any one time. However a few months ago a friend of his told him about go airheads. He bought an air soft gun with his own money and we took him. He loved it and wants to go all the time. I have been there to watch and it is well organized and safety is a top priority. They do not allow profanity. They encourage team building and it is monitored by adults at all times. In an age of technology it is harder and harder to keep our kids physically active. This venue gives my child an outlet that he loves to be active and meet new people. I am one of those over protective parents who is critical of guns and violence but I have to tell you I was impressed by the go airheads team and facility. I know that he is in good hands there and is doing some great physical activity. I hope that the board takes these sorts of things into account. When I told my son there was a possibility you would be closing he became extremely upset and ranted a bit. He asked me to please write in support of you program and 1 assured him that I would. He stressed to let you know that he saves his allowance so he can join his friends at GoAirheads. I also wanted to let you know that as a profession, I'm a clinical social worker, and am not a fan of guns and weapons. I was adamant when my kids were little they would not play with toy guns etc... However, what I noticed is that every lego, every empty paper towel roll and wrapping paper roll became toy guns and swords. I quickly realized that it is not guns and weapons that hurt people but people who misuse weapons who hurt people. We have a strong military family and have both police officers and fire fighters in the family. My son has received extensive safety training regarding guns and weapons and understands that his airsoft gun can be a weapon if not respected and used in a safe manner. Thank you for giving him a place to safely use his airsoft gun and have fun with his friends. Thank you for all your hard work and the business that you do. Please let us know if we can do anything else to support your work! We realize that your job must not be easy when trying to negotiate difficult situations in the Planning and Building Department, especially when it comes to neighborly disputes. We will not pretend to understand codes of building but would like to express to you why we love having our son go to GOAirheads. One of the fist things we noticed when bringing our son to GOAirheads was their strict policy on no profanity. Being a Christian family, we appreciated this rule. We also greatly appreciated their emphasis on safety. These kids are learning to treat weapons with the respect they deserve. In all the times we have been to GOAirheads, we have never once seen traffic or congestion. We love that our son has a safe environment to go to where he isn't going to get into trouble. Airsoft is good, clean fun. Running around all day Is excellent exercise. GOAirheads is a place where kids can make friends with those who have similar interests. These kids have more fun, get more exercise, and learn more life skills at GOAirheads then they would sitting around playing video games on their hand held devices. Certainly something that all of our society will benefit from. wHIBIT It is upsetting to think that an environment that is nothing but positive for the youth who enjoy it could be closed. We request that you make the decision to keep it open. Sincerely, Rob Hawthorne Owner of Rob Hawthorne Photography Kelly Hawthorne Classical Conversations Challenge B Director September 8, 2014 Weld County Department of Planning Services Attn: Chris Gathman 1555 N. 17th Ave. Greeley, CO 80631 Dear Weld County Department of Planning Services, This letter is regarding GoAirheads, at 4471 County Road 7 , Erie, CO 80516. Our 14 year old son has been going to Airheads for Airsoft games for several years. It is a great outlet for socializing with his friends and sharing their common interest. During this time he has reported several occasions where players have been removed from play that day, or for the season, for breach of the rules of fairplay or cussing, as well as safety rules. We have confidence that GoAirheads will and do uphold their rules. We have been ever more impressed with the amount and variation of equipment that they are willing to install in order to provide obstacles and variation in their playing field. The Field Judges have always been fair. We are sad that there are people who do not value the opportunity for kids to have an outside physical activity over video games, and want to close GoAirheads. We hope that doesn't happen. This is our closest Airsoft field and since Airsoft is not allowed in open space, we don't know where the kids would be able to play. With the current mixed attitude regarding guns, attempting to play Airsoft anywhere other than a sanctioned place would likely put my child at risk. Also, we believe it is not allowed in the open space. We hesitate to even have him walk through the neighborhood in his Airsoft gear at the risk of someone taking him as a threat. (He is an adult size kid). Another feature that we appreciate about GoAirheads is that that "big kids", take care of the "little kids". Our son received this care when he was smaller, and is now passing it along to the younger kids. Even though the kids have lots of expensive equipment, there have been few thefts, which speaks to the respect of the other players that the owners inspire. Another thing we like about GoAirheads is that in spite of the number of kids that go there, the access is never difficult. They put in a new big parking lot at the entry, but it is never full as most parents drop off and pick up. We know that they do have adult players, but they must come together? Aside from the fact that my child absolutely loves GoAirheads, We consider it valuable as a socializing, exercising, teaching fairplay, facility and hope that they will be allowed to continue as GoAirheads.
