Secretary Board of Weld County Commissioners P.O. Box 758 Greeley, Colorado 80631 Dear Ms. Kummer: A management training program in corrections will be conducted again this year by the National Institute of Corrections with the assistance of the National Associa- tion of Counties (NACo). This week-long program, endorsed by the National Sheriff's Association, is designed for teams of one county board member (who has a policy role in local corrections) and one sheriff or jail administrator from each of 6o counties. Three training programs will be conducted in Boulder, Colorado; January 21-26, April 29-May 4, and August 12-17, 1979. Travel and per diem will be paid by NIC, with the exception of local ground transportation. The program is designed for urban counties with a population of a 100,000 or over. Priority will be given to counties with an inmate population of 80 or more and a jail staff of 20 or more. Urban counties have common jail problems; they are overcrowded, understaffed, and underbudgeted. Since the urban jail is a high cost operation, often surrounded by controversy, it is important that the sheriff and commissioner be able to work together effectively to improve jail conditions. The objectives of the corrections management training program are to: 1) improve the communication between the county board and the sheriff/corrections administrator, and 2) introduce them to management tools that could be useful in accomplishing the objectives and tasks developed by each county team. According to previous partici- pants, an important outcome of the program was the formulation of an action agenda for jail improvements in their counties. If you are interested in attending one of the training programs, please complete the enclosed application and return it to NACo in the post-paid envelope. Deadlines for applications are December 8, 1978 for the first program; March 2, 1979 for the second; and June 22, 1979 for the third. Note that the form is to be signed by the two individuals who would be attending the training--the sheriff or jail administrator and the county official. For more information, please contact Nancy Dawson at the National Association of Counties (202) 785-9577.
