We attended the PC hearing on Sept. 1. We were surprised that the "elephant in the room," namely the railroad activity going on at this property, was not mentioned or acknowledged in any way. 1 The railroad has been working on the north end of the property in question for quite a few months. Rows of parallel dead end tracks are being installed . They have also installed a second set of tracks across 23 3/4 complete with drop arms. This activity tells us something big is going on. This has all been happening while the property is still zoned agriculture. More disturbing to us is that the homeowners on the other side of the track have not been consulted or even notified e about what is taking place . We have heard rumors that it is some kind of railroad storage yard . Whatever it is, our neighborhood lifestyle is going to be forever altered . Why was this put near existing residential properties? They have plenty of room further west of us in the more industrial area . We can hardly wait to hear railroad noises and whistles 24/7 and look at rows of rail cars as we drive into our neighborhood . We understand that the railroad can do pretty much as it pleases, but they don't seem to worry about the effects their actions have on others. We are not opposed to some sort of industrial activity on this property, but certainly not a railroad storage yard . The water, in the control box, comes north by a pipe under the railroad, which is used to irrigate our crops. In the past changes in the water flow was made by going across the tracks on a farm road when the train cars were not present or going around the train, using railroad easements and a break in the train at county road 23 %. Neither of these options are available to us at this time. Our concerns were expressed with Eric Halverson, a Great Western operations manager, last night (September 15 , 2015) and he has promised to look into the matter. Weld County' s Right to Farm statute, points out the value of getting water to irrigate our land, and we feel this is an important issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
