PROCLAMATION
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER, 2016
WHEREAS, oftentimes it is difficult for victims of domestic violence to realize that they
are being abused, and many victims believe if the person they love has not hurt them
physically, or if they have not left a bruise or beat them bad enough to be
hospitalized, it is not abuse. Victims of domestic violence have been taught by their
abusers to believe that constant calling, texting, excessive jealousy, demeaning
names, inability to make decisions on their own, limits on contact with friends and
family, restriction on who they talk to, are signs of love. in reality, these actions are
signs of controlling behavior, stalking isolation and emotional abuse, which are likely
to become an unhealthy relationship, and
WHEREAS, in this day and age, this mentality of "love" is being passed down to our
youth, creating unhealthy relationships and boundaries, which continue the cycle of
violence for another generation, and
WHEREAS, A Woman's Place haas,prov fecl s?rvkes to Weld County for the past 39
years with safe shelter, safety .plan*g, ,couriselin, legal advocacy, and overall
assistance for victims and survivors orr�c violence, and it is the mission of
A Woman's Place to shelter and helpheVtthpocitte victi s and survivors of domestic
violence to become safe, secure aid `self -rant;,., and through education and
collaboration, to mobilize our community to help prevent domestic violence.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim the'
month of October, 2016, as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and reaffirms the
County's commitment to provide education and empower victims and survivors to help
stop the cycle of domestic violence.
