Re: license plate renewal notification and fees
Dear Ms. Koppes,

I would like to bring a matter to your attention, express my frustration, and suggest
a remedy.
I moved to Weld County last July. I had been in Larimer County for 21 years before
that. I have not moved often, but have moved within Larimer, so I have some
experience with the process. I am very conscientious when it comes to my
responsibilities: bills, mail, forwarding addresses, etc.
When I moved from Windsor (Larimer) to Windsor (Weld) I went through all the
steps to update my information with all parties. I directed my mail to be forwarded
for 1 year, from last July 28 to this July 28. I updated my voter registration with
Weld County. I updated my address on the State website for my driver's license. And
here is where my frustration arises.
I own 4 cars. I pay 4 annual registrations. I never received renewal notices, and
would not have realized that all 4 plates had expired except that I got a ticket for the
offense a few days ago when I was parked in Fort Collins.
I came in to the county office to renew my plates. I asked the lady in your office why
I had not received any reminders. She told me that the reminders are sent by the
state as a courtesy. She said that the state agency that changed my address for my
driver's license does not communicate that information with the counties that
collect license fees on behalf of the state.

Well isn't that just awesome.
Why were the registration renewal reminders not forwarded? Is the post office
instructed to return them to sender? If so, is the sender not under any obligation to
find me, especially when I changed my address with them? Why not just instruct
renewal reminders to be forwarded? And why is it that my change of address with
the driving license is not communicated to my car registrations.
I pay attention to everything that comes across my desk. I am mad at myself for not
noticing the expired plates, but neither did the drivers of my cars, a tow truck driver,
the Honda dealership where I have service, or anyone else until the parking cop.

my address with the state/county. Having now had $400 in fines ($325 in late plate
fees and $75 for the ticket) I am suspicious of the easy money made on people who
don't know to register changes with both the state and county and lose track of
renewing their plates. Those fines essentially doubled my normal registration fees.
How am I supposed to know that the fragments of the Department of Motor Vehicles
do not communicate with each other? How am I supposed to know that my renewal
reminders will not be forwarded in spite of my forwarding order with the post
office? That just doesn't seem to be right, fair, logical or just. What recourse would
you suggest?
Perhaps you have little control over most of this, but here is a suggestion:
Most people know to change their voter registration when they move. Could you put
a message or a link on the Weld County website directing people to update their car
registration if they are new to the county?
Much appreciation,
.A,A)
