To the Weld County Board of Health & Environment and affiliated County Commissioners,
I am writing to express our support of Northern Colorado AIDS Project's (NCAP) proposal to
expand Syringe Access Services to Weld County. As a service provider in this area, I recognize
that licit and illicit drug use is prevalent in Weld County and support efforts to minimize its
harmful effects upon individuals and our community. I understand the NCAP's efforts are
grounded in best practice recommendations recognized by the state.
We're well aware of the need for evidence -based solutions to many of the issues related to
injection drug use. Expanding Syringe Access Services would not only promote individual health
for those accessing services, but would also benefit the many communities in Weld County.
Syringe access services have reduced the number of improperly discarded syringes in public,
lowered the risk of needle sticks to first responders and the public, decreased the incidence of HIV
and Hepatitis C infection, and addressed overdose and other harms of the opioid epidemic in
Colorado. We support the implementation of these services in Weld with the belief that they will
have the same positive impact on public health.
To support the best health outcomes of our community, it is vital for service providers and public
officials to work collaboratively. I appreciate the initiative demonstrated by the board of health
and affiliated county commissioners in addressing health needs in Weld County and I hope that
you will support this important step in reducing drug -related harm in our community.
