PROCLAMATION
NATIONAL ADULT EDUCATION AND FAMILY LITERACY WEEK
SEPTEMBER 25- 30, 2017
WHEREAS, Adult Education serves adults 16 years of age and older who are no longer
enrolled in school and who function under the 12th grade level, and,
WHEREAS, services include teaching foundation skills in reading, math and English,
coupled with college and career readiness skills that help lead to employment or
transition to post -secondary education or certification, and,
WHEREAS, public schools, community colleges, libraries, and community -based
organizations offer programs at the local level and the demand for more educated
workers continues to grow, and,
WHEREAS, by the year 2020, 65 percent of all jobs will require some level of
postsecondary education, and,
Whereas, Adult Education is also a smart investment because low -skilled adults are
two times more likely to be unemployed; three times more likely to be in poverty; four
times more likely to be in poor health; and eight times more likely to be incarcerated,
and,
WHEREAS, it is encouraged for all residents to invest in adult education, which means
investing in economic growth for our communities.
THEREFORE, the Board of Weld County Commissioners, does hereby proclaim
September 25-30, 2017 as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week and
encourages Weld residents to invest in adult education.
