SUBJECT: Greeley Police Department Pistol Range
1 . The property in question is owned by the City of Greeley and Weld County.
2. The proposed indoor range will be located at the same location as the
existing outdoor range.
3. Geographically the property is located south of the airport on the
south side of State Highway 263 (8th Street extended) and east of the
main entrance to the airport.
4. The use of the property for an indoor pistol range would not be
inconsistent with the current zoning on the property. The area is currently
located in an Industrial District.
5. The structure that will house the indoor range is on the property
currently and is utilized as a warehouse. Minimal conversion will be
required to facilitate the range. Safety features are indicated in the

Dear Mr. Munn:
5.
Ln relerence to our phone conversat'ion of tlotrrber l9 l ''r6 about the
building located on the Greeley Police Department Pistol Range, 1
offer the following information.
The building will be used as an indoor pistol range for nothing larger
than . 38 special caliber, midrange wadcutter ammunition. There is
also room for storage of targets and cardboards than are used both
indoors and outdoors.
The departments using this building will be the same departments that
now use the outdoor range. These departments include at this time;
Greeley Police Department, Weld County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State
Patrol , Colorado Game and Fish, Weld County Hospital Security, Evans
Police Department, Greeley Police Academy, University of Northern
Colorado Department of Public Safety and Weld County Probation Depart-
ment.
Even with all of these departments using the range at prAeent, it is
in use only about 15 days per month. Officers from all these depart-
ments will only be allowed to use the indoor range after they have
demonstrated the ability to handle a weapon safely and attain accuracy
to place all shots in a predetermined space on the target. Most all
of the shooting will be done during the hours of 8:00.A.11. to. 7:00 P .M.
but there may be occasions that it will he used outside of these hours
but not on a regular basis.
"A COMMUNITY OF PROGRESS"
The equipment that has been installed to this point includes, bathroom
with stool and sink, heating and air conditioning unit and ventilating
fans capable of changing the air every three minutes.
Safety features include a one half inch steel boiler plate back stop
set at a 45° angle to deflect bullets into a sand trap below floor
level, walls on both sides of the shooters from floor to ceiling made
from 2X4 studs on 12 inch centers with one half inch plywood on both
sides of the studs and filled with sand, and baffles hung from the
ceiling at such an angle that any shot fired into the ceiling would
have to travel through a minimum of five pieces of 3/4 inch plywood
before hitting the ceiling insulation. There is no way a bullet could
go out through either wall or ceiling if there was an accidental dis-
charge.
The equipment that is intended to go into the building is a set of five
turning targets. These targets are hung on two cables and are controlled
by the invididual shooting or may be run by the Range Master with a
master control. The targets will go from the shooter to the back stop
on the cables and therefore no shooter ever needs to step forward of the
firing line.
The legal description of the property is as follows: 4 acres in the SEA,
SW4, Section 2, Township 5N, Range 65W, 6 P.M.
I hope this has answered your questions and I will await your answer.
If you have any further questions. please contact me.
Sincerely,
LAY
Wilbur B. Ross, Captain
