Dear Dr.Whilden: .
Thank you for your letter dated September 19, 1979, regarding a proposed
traffic light at-the intersection of State Highway 52 and Weld County
. Road 13. •
We have contacted the State Highway Department on this matter and have
confirmed that the installation of traffic lights on state roads is the
responsibility of the State.
. Also for your information,Weld County Road 13 just south of State Highway .
52 lies with the city limits of Dacono and,is thus under that City's
maintenance responsibility.
Weld County is now in the.process of building.Weld County Road-13 west of ,
the railroad tracks from Firestone to State Highway 52. This will.be
complete this fall. .

I am writing to express an concern conveyed to me by our Transportation
Department. The concern is a need fora traffic signal light at the
intersection :of State Highway. 52 and Weld County Road 13. During the
course of a regular school day, this intersection is negotiated by at
least 20 loaded school buses. These buses are primarily those traveling
between Frederick High School and Frederick Elementary School to the
Glens development.
Our problem is especially bad in the evening when it is not unusual for
a bus to wait several minutes on Road 13 to get onto Highway 52 because
of heavy traffic. The problem is further compounded because of trailers
and equipment parked at the grain elevator just west of Road 13. This
blocks vision and bus drivers are unable to see traffic coming from the
west on Highway 52. Also, on at least two days out of the past 10 days,
large trucks'have parked on both sides of Highway 52. As a result, vision
is obstructed from the east on Highway 52. A school bus driver takes a
serious chance in pulling onto Highway 52. (The attached sketch of the
intersection by one of our bus drivers depicts the situation. )
A traffic light at this location would reduce the chances of a possible
tragic accident at this intersection. We believe the margin of safety
gained would justify the cost of the installation.
Your prompt consideration to this matter will be appreciated.
