EXCERPT FROM REGULAR MEETING BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS WELD COUNTY, COLORADO OCTOBER 15, 1975 TAPE #75-101 CHAIRMAN BILLINGS : This Board knows and a great many people in Weld County know that Col. Baker and his people out there are one of the major and most tremendous assets that this county has had for services for everybody and anybody. Weld County did acquire the missile site a few years ago and are in the major process this year of devel- oping it into Weld County' s first park. Col. Baker and his men volunteered to go out there and remove all the un- necessary pipes , wiring and equipment. Tons of it. How they did it in the short time they did at no expense to the county or, was an unbelievable fete, but I can tell you that when it was in business I was able to witness all the para- phernalia that was in there that was not necessary to keep in order to restore to a historical site. You wouldn' t be- lieve anyway, they have that out there for quite sometime and do all kinds of work in the county. This Board thought it only appropriate to recognize each one of those individuals with a certificate which the county reluctantly gives out, don' t give to everybody and anybody. A special award that this Board makes from time to time. I 'd like to read off those names for those people receiving those certificates: CMSgt Robert L. Colhour. If I don' t pronounce these right, Colonel, you just let me know. COLONEL BAKER: All right. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS : CMSgt Gene M. Norris, SMSgt Allen C. Dickerson, SMSGT Arvid N. Hope 750612 J3 ©005 r. ^ COLONEL BAKER: Hoppe. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS : Hoppe, SSgt Allen C. Jones, TSgt Harry E. Lamb, MSgt Gary L. Montgomery, Sgt William T. Gamble, TSgt George D. Baker, TSgt Billy B. Tackett, TSgt Danny L. Sudduth, SSgt Marvin B. Johnson, TSgt Warren A. Miller, SSgt Rex A. Williams, MSgt James E. Bonato, MSgt William F . Sharpley, Lt. Col. Clifford A. Baker . I 'd like to read this resolution dated October 15, 1975. Whereas , Weld County acquired a former Atlas Missile Site which is located on bluffs providing a commanding view of the Cache La Poudre Valley, and, whereas, much vandalism occurred to a great deal of military equipment remaining at the site, and, whereas , a various personnel of the 138th Tactical Control Squadron (CRC) (TAC) , Greeley Air National Guard Station, led by their Commander , Lt. Col. Clifford A. Baker, were instrumental in clearing the site and helping to make it Weld County' s first rural park. Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Board of Weld County Commissioners makes known its deep appreciation of Lt. Col. Baker and the work of his squadron. The above and foregoing resolution was, on motion duly made and seconded, adopted by the following vote on the 15th day of October , 1975. All of the different certificates read the same with exception of the names of each one of the individuals. The Chair would entertain a motion to adopt. COMMISSIONER MOSER: I would so move to adopt those certi- ficates or petitions or whatever you call it. COMMISSIONER JACOBUCCI: I ' ll second that. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS: The motion has been seconded . How do you vote, Mr . Moser? COMMISSIONER MOSER: Yes. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS : Mr . Jacobucci? 2 r COMMISSIONER JACOBUCCI : Aye. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS: The Chair votes yes and let the record so show that. Comments by the Board regarding the certificates. Mr. Jacobucci. COMMISSIONER JACOBUCCI : I think they did very good out there. We were out there a couple of times to see what they were all doing. I think they brought the missile site up to a very good grade of cleanliness and cleaned up a lot of the wire like you say and it looks good there. And, I think they probably enjoyed their stay out there somewhat. I know they were, seemed to be, enjoying it. And we were out there for a lunch. When was it? About two months ago. Had a nice lunch, to look over what was taking place out there. I was real im- pressed with it and I want to compliment Col. Baker and his men for the wonderful job they have done. COMMISSIONER MOSER: I would like to say this 1973 floods and when the Latham Dam breakage. I was new in the office. I seen a lot of activity going on and I wondered if when all this personnel, equipment and what not helping out this flood came from. Well, I hadn' t at that point in time, well, I had, I guess I hadn' t at that point in time. I guess I 'd met Col. Baker. I didn' t realize then how respondent they are in case of emer- gency. I certainly did learn a lot in regards to what it means to have a National Guard on the job. I can say that without the National Guard at that point in time, why we certainly would have had a much more strenuous time in controlling the very very ad- verse conditions. Maybe on that, Col. Baker and all the other things that go on in Weld County, and you have helped with and are able, are certainly able. You are certainly just what your title says. It is National Guard. On guard all the time and I certainly do appreciate that we do have you here in Weld County. Thank you very much. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS : Colonel, I 'd like you to come up now and I ' d like to present you with a plaque to put on the wall in recognition of just one of the thins you 've done. 138th Tactical Squadron, Greeley Air National Guard, October 15th, 1975 . In deep appreciation of the work that the members of the 138th Tac- tical Squadron in clearing the former Atlas Missile Site, in helping create Weld County' s first rural park. Board of County Commissioners, Weld County, Colorado. COLONEL BAKER: Thank you very much, Glenn. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS: We appreciate it. We could stay here all morning and tell what Col. Baker has done. I know he has loaned me airplanes after blizzards to find out if anyone was stranded and check rivers when we were having floods . And I just don' t think you people get enough credit for what you do in this area. And we appreciate it very much. COLONEL BAKER: Well, I appreciate the recognition and I ' ll pass this on to the squadron. CHAIRMAN BILLINGS: We will get those certificates. We have them duly signed and attested to by the Clerk and Recorder. Give it to Jeannie. It will take her a few minutes, Colonel. If you want to wait a little bit, why she will have those ready, too. And you may present them to all your men. COLONEL BAKER: Okay. Thank you very much. Certainly ap- preciate this, Glenn. 4
