WHEREAS, the freedoms and liberties we enjoy as a nation are possible only by the
sacrifices and dedication of servicemen and women around the world, who have fought
and died to protect our way of life and our rights, established in the Constitution. Over 20
million veterans live in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Weld County is home to many veterans. Between 18 to 19 thousand veterans
live in Weld County. Veterans residing in our county have served in numerous conflicts
ranging from World War I and II, to Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Operation Enduring
Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We must never forget to honor and appreciate
the work those who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard
have done to keep us safe; and
WHEREAS, originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I and to
honor those who served, Veterans Day was enacted in 1954 by President Dwight D.
Eisenhower to celebrate American veterans of all wars. He designated the eleventh day of
November as a time for us to "solemnly remember those who fought so valiantly, on the
seas, in the air and on foreign shores to protect our heritage and freedom;" and
NOW, THEREFORE, let it be known that in honor of Veterans Day, November 11, 2017,
the Weld County Board of Commissioners does hereby call upon the citizens of Weld
County to make a commitment in honoring our veterans, and by doing so, reaffirms our
strong appreciation for and belief in the United States Constitution, and all who have
fought to defend it.
