Hall FROM: Byron L. Howell /i / // SUBJECT: Search for uranium or radium dumps on sites within Weld County In searching for possible uranium or radium sites and dumps, I first spoke withGary Wells, City Manager for Erie and Firestone. He knew of no sites or dumps by memory or by record in either city. The Erie Town Clerk and the other personnel there also stated that there were no sites or dumps on record or otherwise. I spoke with the assistant Town Clerk in Dacono and she stated that there were no sites or dumps in memory or on record in the Dacono area. She mentioned two men who knew the area well and who worked in the mines in the area who would know if there were any sites or dumps in the area. So, I spoke with Charles Sabados' wife. She spoke with her husband, Charles, and there are no sites or dumps in the Dacono area according to them. Betty Figurillo, Town Clerk of Frederick, stated that there were no sites or dumps in memory or on record in the Frederick area. My conclusion is that there are no uranium or radium sites or dumps in the Erie, Dacono, Frederick, and Firestone areas. The only mining activity in these areas was coal mining. A further check for uranium or radium sites or dumps was carried out at the Greeley City Library and the Weld County Library. At the Weld County Library, there were no old business listings to check. However, the following books were checked; but no information concerning uranium or radium sites or dumps was found. The book or sources I checked are listed: - 1) Stampede to Timberline by M. Walle 978.8 2) Geology and Natural Resources of Colorado by Russel D. George 557.88 3) The Mines of Colorado by 0. Hollister 338.20978 4) Colorado Mining by D. Smith 338.209788 5) Bonanza Victorian by C. Stoehr 978.8 6) South Platte County - A History of Old Weld County by Dean Krakel 7) History of Colorado, Vol. 1, by Wilbur Fisk Stone 978.8 The Greeley City Library had no information whatsoever on uranium or radium sites or dumps within Weld County.
