Dear Merrie :
Sorry it has taken so long to properly express our gratitude, but besides the excuses of being preoccupied by
fire recovery and flood events, I have had a hard time finding the right words to express our gratitude for the
support you provided our county during a very difficult time . On behalf of the Costilla County community, I
want to thank you for the leadership, professionalism and dedication that you displayed during your time at
the Costilla County Emergency Operations Center during the Spring Fire .
The knowledge of Emergency Management that you brought to this incident and to our EOC raised the bar a
level for our entire team and considerably enhanced the county' s ability to support our citizens affected by
this disaster. The rapport you developed with our local staff and the positive presence you provided in the
EOC gave everyone confidence that they were effectively working as a team . Your engaging and respectful
leadership resulted in very positive relationships in the EOC - a great accomplishment given the limited time
that you spent with us .
Incident Commander Shane Greer stated , "This went well , " during his final remarks to the Spring Fire
evacuees and I could not agree more . I am very proud of the way Costilla County responded to the Spring
Fire and that could not have happened without your contribution and leadership . It was a very dark time for
the county as the fire destroyed 149 homes, ravaged the forest and forced hundreds to be evacuated for two
weeks . The strength of your work and your dedication gave us hope that in the end our community' s
strength and resiliency would shine through the darkness .
As happens with disasters, the Spring Fire had no regard for weekends or holidays . I want to thank you, as
well as your family and friends that you left behind to join us in the Fort Garland EOC . Your unselfish
commitment and the sacrifices of your family and friends back home was greatly appreciated . Your
dedication to Emergency Management and the Spring Fire disaster in Costilla County is truly and sincerely
appreciated in our community .
