Box 250 Severance, CO 80546 C Re: Test Pit Observation Results and OWTS Design Document Dairy Tech OWTS Weld County, Colorado EEC Project No. 18-01-052 Mr. Dumm: C EARTH ENGINEERING COMPANY, INC. On March 23'', 2018, Earth Engineering Company, Inc. (EEC) personnel completed the percolation testing you requested for the above referenced project. The purpose of this letter is to provide "design documentation" for the new facility and existing 2 -bedroom residence in accordance with the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment regulations. To complete the site soil evaluation, EEC personnel observed two (2) soil profile test pits to a depth of approximately 8 feet below present site grade. The logs of the 8 feet deep test pits are included with this report. The referenced site is located northeast of the intersection of Weld County Roads 21 and 70, north of Windsor in Weld County, Colorado. The site had an approximately 2% slope toward the east and was presently developed with existing buildings and a driveway atthe time of our field workAccording to the information made available to EEC, there are no utilities or easements in conflict with the presented locations of the system components. The materials encountered in the profile test pits at the on -site wastewater treatment system (OWTS) site generally consisted of brown/light brown sandy lean clay soils and brown/dark brown sandy clay apparent fill materials underlain by grey/tan and rust claystone bedrock at a depth of approximately 7 feet below present site grades which extended to the depths explored. At the time of excavating, no groundwater was observed in the test pits. P.O. Box 271428, Fort Collins, CO80527S phone: 970.775.2004 fax: 970.6 63.0282 Earth Engineering Company, Inc. EEC Project No. 18-01-052 April 5, 2018 Page 2 Based upon the visual soil classification, the site sandy lean clay soils and the site sandy lean clay apparent fill materials classify as Soil Type 4A which corresponds to a percolation rate of 91 to 120 minutes per inch. Soil Type 4A classification should be assumed in the design. Weld County standards also require that neither groundwater nor bedrock be encountered within 6 feet below ground surface in the area of a conventional absorption field. The test pit completed indicates the near surface site soils do meet the bedrock and groundwater criteria. Based on the results as outlined above, it appears and engineered -type septic absorption system would be required for the residence and Weld County Health Department regulations will require a design document for the system. In siting of the absorption field, Weld County criteria concerning proximity to drainage ways, property lines and other site features should be addressed. Wastewater Strength We expect the wastewater disposed through the OWTS for this site will be within the range of properties for average residential applications as shown in the following table: Table 8: Typical Composition of Untreated Domestic Wastewater Composition Units Concentration Weak Average Strong Total Suspended Solids Mg/L 100 220 350 BOLD at 20°C Mg/L, 1 1 0 220 400 0 Nitrogen (:total as N) Mg.IL 20 40 85 Phosphorus (total as P) Mgt 4 8 15 Mg/L. 50 100 150 Fats, Oil &. Grease (FOCI) Total Colifornn Mg/L 106-107 107-108 10k-109 Source: Table 8, Typical Composition of Untreated Domestic Wastewater from Wastewater Engineering, Treatment, Disposal and Reuse, Metcalf & Eddy, 1991 Assumptions It is our understanding the existing residence at the site contains 2 bedrooms and the proposal Dairy Tech facility will have a maximum of 20 office workers. Based on Weld County Guidelines, the residence will contribute 300 gpd and the Dairy Tech facility will Earth Engineering Company, Inc. EEC Project No. 18-01-052 April 5, 2018 Page 3 contribute 15 gallons per worker per day, or 300 gpd. A design flow rate of 600 gpd as determined from Table 30--1 and 30-6-2 was used to size the absorption field. In addition, a Long Term Absorption Rate (LTAR) of 1.0 gpd/ft2 was determined from Table 30-10-1 utilizing the absorption rate of the unlined sand filter. Initial size calculations indicate 600 ft2 of required absorption area, which was used in the design. Applying the equivalent area for Quick4 Infiltrators of 12 ft2 per chamber for a bed system, a required number of 52 chambers was determined. The prepared design incorporates 52 Quick4 Infiltrator chambers in a pressure dosed sand filter system consisting of 4 rows of 13 chambers per row as shown on the attached site layout plan. System Component Specifications The system is intended to incorporate a 1,000 gallon two -chamber precast concrete septic tank to serve the proposal Dairy Tech building and a 1,000 gallon two -chamber precast tank to serve the existing residence, both leading to a 1,000 gallon single -chamber pump tank equipped with an Orenco PESO Fligh Head Effluent pump for pressure dosing of the absorption field. The septic tanks and pump chamber shall comply with the structural design criteria of ASTM C1227-12 (Standard Specification for Precast Septic Tanks). 30" risers may be needed to facilitate required bury depth based on pipe elevations exiting the house. Shop drawings and specifications should be furnished by the installer once a tank supplier is selected. Groundwater was not observed in the test borings at the site, therefore anchoring of the septic tank does not appear necessary. The distribution lines shall consist of 2" diameter schedule 40 PVC pips with 1/8" holes drilled every 4 feet on center. The pipes should be laid directly on the imported sand bed and the pipe holes shall be oriented to spray upwards with one drain hole drilled on the underside of the pipe at the far end of each line to allow the pipe to drain when the pump cycles off Installation Procedures It appears the system could be installed using conventional excavation equipment (i.e. rubber tire backhoe or track hoe). All system components shall be installed using current Earth Engineering Company, Inc. EEC Project No. 18-01-052 April 5, 2018 Page 4 state -of -practice technology by a licensed installer approved by the Weld County Department of Health and Environment. After the bed area has been excavated, the imported replacement concrete sand shall be moistened and lightly compacted to reduce the potential for chamber settling. The end of each pressure pipe shall be fitted with a flushing valve assembly and inspection ports shall be installed at the corners of the field. System Operation and Maintenance Please find attached A Homeowner's Guide to Septic Systems as prepared by the United States Environmental Protection agency. This guide contains useful information regarding the operation and maintenance of your septic system. The guide may also be found online at http://www.epa.gov/o m/septic/pubs/homeowner_guide_long.pdf GENERAL COMMENTS The analysis and recommendations presented in this report are based upon the data obtained from the soil test pits performed at the indicated locations and from any other information discussed in this report. This report does not reflect any variations which may occur across the site. The nature and extent of such variations may not become evident until construction. If variations appear evident, it will be necessary to re-evaluate the recommendations of this report. It is recommended that the geotechnical engineer be retained to review the plans and specifications so comments can be made regarding the interpretation and implementation of our geotechnical recommendations in the design and specifications. It is further recommended that the geotechnical engineer be retained for testing and observations during earthwork and foundation construction phases to help determine that the design requirements are fulfilled. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of Richard Dumm for specific application to the project discussed and has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. No warranty, express or implied, is made. In the event that any changes in the nature, design or location of the project as outlined in this Earth Engineering Company, Inc. EEC Project No. 18-01-052 April 5, 2018 Page 5 report are planned, the conclusions and recommendations contained in this report shall not be considered valid unless the changes are reviewed and the conclusions of this report are modified or verified in writing by the geotechnical engineer.
