MEMORIAL DAY - MAY 28, 2018
WHEREAS, the Board of Weld County Commissioners wishes to join the citizens of Weld
County in commemorating those of the armed forces who gave their lives while serving
our country, and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 17,000 veterans in Weld County who have
contributed to the freedom enjoyed by Americans today, and many of these veterans
continue to serve our communities by joining Weld County law enforcement agencies and
fire districts, and
WHEREAS, Memorial Day has been observed since 1868, when it was first established by
the Grand Army of the Republic, initially as Decoration Day, as a time for the nation to
decorate graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers, and
WHEREAS, Memorial Day is a testament to the spirit, sacrifice and commitment of our
veterans to the common defense of our nation and to the broader cause of peace and
freedom from tyranny; and
WHEREAS, in 1868, Major General John A Logan declared that Decoration Day should be
observed on May 30, as a way to guard their veterans' graves with sacred vigilance. "Let
pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let
no neglect, no savages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that
we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic,' and
WHEREAS, Monday, May 28, 2018, has been proclaimed Memorial Day.
NOW, THEREFORE, let it be known that the Board of Weld County Commissioners does
hereby call upon the citizens of Weld County to make a commitment in honoring our
dead, especially those who died while serving our country. They have earned our
undying gratitude. Our debt to the heroic men and women in the service of our country
can never be repaid. We shall never forget their sacrifices.
