PLNARKS: Public Assistance caseloads during January continued to show stability in both
public assistance categories, such as Aid to Dependent Children, and in Food Stamps. A
slight decline in caseload is noted compared with the same month in 1977. For example,
the department provided financial assistance to 636 fewer individuals in January, 1978
compared with January, 1977.
Fxpenditures (excluding Old Age Pension) for January, 1978 were $529,684. This amount was
$7,981 less than the previous month but $52,716 more than the same month in 1977. Inflation
accounts for the increase in costs compared with the prior year despite a stable caseload.
Although public assistance caseloads continue their stable pattern, there has been a
sizable increase in child protection cases served by the Department. This load has in-
creased from 225 households (cases) carried in January, 1977 to 294 for January, 1978 (31%
increase) . The community's increased awareness and reporting of child abuse and child
neglect cases are judged to be responsible for this increase.
