RE: WCR 4 Closure at UPRR Tracks
Dear Ms. Kirkmeyer,
RECEIVED
FEB 2 3 2018
WELD COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS
We recently learned of the planned railroad crossing at WCR 4 to build a railroad siding. Vestas employs over 1,200
people at two factories collocated on East Crown Prince Blvd that will be directly impacted by the proposed dosure.
WCR 4 is a critical roadway for Vestas employees to drive into work, and one of only two current access roads to the
Vestas campus.
Our two factories operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to produce and ship, via rail, thousands of industrial scale
wind turbine components. Over 1,200 employees drive into our campus every day therefore access to the factories
from WCR 4 is essential. In the case of WCR 6 being blocked by a train, and without any mitigating road openings,
the only alternative route for employee or emergency vehicle access is via remote dirt county roads.
This is not only a matter that will cause significant vehicle congestion and delays for employees commuting to the
campus, but is also a matter of safety. In a letter dated February 8th, 2018, the Brighton Fire Rescue District Fire
Chief Mark Bodane notes that the dosing of WCR 4 could affect emergency response to the Vestas campus in the
event of fire or medical calls. Furthermore, with WCR 4 dosing, the Fire Department would be forced to attempt to
respond to emergency calls and fires east of the railroad crossing on WCR 4 by traveling WCR 6 and through the
Vestas campus, causing detrimental delays.
Lastly, the proposed closure would impact Vestas two -acre donation to the Brighton Fire District for a planned fire
station on WCR 4, east of the railroad crossing, which plans to serve the industrial corridor and residential growth in
North Brighton.
We would like to see this decision reversed or a mitigation plan proposed to ensure safety and accessibility to the
Vestas campus and its entire staff.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us below.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Krings
