Dear Chairman Carlson:
Because of the tremendous increase in gasoline prices, cost
of repairs, insurance, it has become impossible to operate a car
for 140 a mile.
I realize that the State Statutes does state 140 per mile,
but other counties have realized the problem and have either leased
the employees cars or in one instance provided 40 additional per
mile and called it car maintance.
El Paso County recently purchased cars for the assessors office,
which a big share of the counties already have.
I think my biggest complaint is that there is no equity in
Weld County. A big share .of the departments do have vehicles, who
use them for their work but also drive them to their homes, at
county expense. I know of a number of employees who drive 40 miles
round trip, and in one instance an employee drives 65 miles at
county expense which equates to $300 per month, since he has no
investment in a vehicle and no expense.
My personal feeling is that all county employees who drive
should either have a vehicle or we should all drive our own at a
set price per mile. There are of course exceptions, as for instance
the Sheriff. I have sat back for years and watched the terrible
inequalities between departments as far as the use of vehicles.
I now charge the County Council and Commissioners to correct
this inequity.
Very truly yours,
