RE: City of Longmont, Colorado Railroad Crossing Safety Project- CRISI Grant Application
Dear Madam Secretary,
We are pleased to provide this letter of support for Longmont's CRISI grant application for the City's
Railroad Crossing Safety Project in Colorado.
The City of Longmont agrees to contribute half of the total project cost, which is a 50% local match
funding towards this 8-million-dollar project.The grant will provide for safety improvements such as,quad
gates,medians,channelization devices,and other equipment that will improve safety while creating quiet
zones throughout this corridor. Longmont is a rural community of less than 100,000 residents located in
central Colorado.
While communities across the United States benefit from rail transportation assets,the City of Longmont
has a unique development pattern resulting in seventeen(17)total at-grade crossings or conflict points of
the BNSF mainline railroad tracks and public streets. Longmont is actively working with the BNSF on
safety and noise improvements at one of the railroad crossings and is requesting federal assistance to
complete the remaining 16 at-grade crossings.Additionally,the horns have become more intense,with
the change in the train horn rule,and more frequent with the doubling of rail traffic(now 20 trains per day)
through Longmont in the last 10 years.
