BOX 758 GREELEY, COLORADO 80632 June 3, 2019 Mr. Dean Williams, Executive Director Colorado Department of Corrections 1250 Academy Park Loop Colorado Springs, CO 80910 Mr. Jeff Long, Acting Warden Sterling Correctional Facility 12101 CO -61 Sterling, CO 80751 Re: Expansion of Sterling Correctional Facility Inmate Work Program into Weld County Dear Sirs: It has come to our attention that approximately two weeks ago a new program began whereby inmates sentenced to confinement at the Sterling Correctional Facility (SCF) are being released from SCF to work at a hemp farm in Logan County. Currently the inmates are supervised by Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) employees when they are away from SCF during the day. The inmates return to SCF at night. However, within the next two weeks the inmates will begin staying overnight at a motel in Logan County. They will have GPS monitors but otherwise will not be supervised by DOC personnel. We understand this program started without first receiving input from Brittny Lewton, District Attorney for the 13th Judicial District. Additionally, the citizens of Logan County were not informed of the program and were not provided the opportunity to voice their concerns prior to its commencement. We have been informed that the DOC desires to expand the program into Weld County. Please be advised that the Board of County Commissioners of Weld County and the undersigned District Attorney for the 19th Judicial District, Weld County Sheriff, and Chair of the Weld County Community Corrections Board adamantly oppose such expansion. We believe it would circumvent proper review by the Weld County Community Corrections Board and put Weld County citizens at risk. We respectfully request that you provide us with all information regarding the DOC's plans to expand the SCF inmate work program into Weld County. Comnnuoica-kQ c>S L.p/t2/t9 2019-2116 To be clear, we oppose such expansion and will use all legal means necessary to stop it from occurring. Please contact Mr. Doug Erler, Director, Weld County Justice Services Department, at (970) 400-4847, to further discuss this matter.
