PROCLAMATION
ALZHEIMER'S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH - JUNE 2019
WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder,
tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and
physical impairments; and
WHEREAS, there are no known treatments to prevent or cure, let alone slow the
progression of Alzheimer's disease, the sixth -leading cause of death in the United
States and more than 5.8 million people in the United States are living with
Alzheimer's disease, including 73,000 in Colorado; and
WHEREAS, volunteer caregivers bear an extraordinary burden in caring for loved
ones, with more than 16 million caregivers providing over 18.5 billion hours of
unpaid care those with Alzheimer's and other dementias in 2018; and, in Colorado,
more than a quarter of a million family members and friends provided 287 million
hours of unpaid care; and
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Association estimates the direct costs of caring for
those with Alzheimer's to the United States in 2019 at $290 billion; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Weld County Commissioners recognizes the efforts of the
Alzheimer's Association to raise funds and promote awareness to fight Alzheimer's
disease and other dementias, thereby improving the quality of human life for those
living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Board of Weld County Commissioners
does hereby proclaim June 2019 as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and
urges all residents to wear purple to help spread global awareness of the
Alzheimer's Association's vision of imagining a world without Alzheimer's disease.
