Over 20 million veterans live in the United States; and WHEREAS, Weld County is home to many veterans. Between 18 to 19 thousand veterans live in Weld County. Veterans residing in our county have served in numerous conflicts ranging from World War I and II, to Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We must never forget to honor and appreciate the work those who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard have done to keep us safe; and WHEREAS, originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the end of World War I and to honor those who served, Veterans Day was enacted in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to celebrate American veterans of all wars. He designated the eleventh day of November as a time for us to "solemnly remember those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air and on foreign shores to protect our heritage and freedom;" and NOW, THEREFORE, let it be known that in honor of Veterans Day, November 11, 2019, the Weld County Board of Commissioners does hereby call upon the citizens of Weld County to make a commitment in honoring our veterans, and by doing so, reaffirms our strong appreciation for and belief in the United States Constitution, and all who have fought to defend it.
