Dear Mr. Denning,
Congratulations to Greeley West coach Colin Shaha and the Spartans boys swimming and diving team for winning the
class 4A state championship on Saturday, May 18 in Thornton. All state championship victories are special, but this one
is exceptionally so as it's the first boys swimming and diving title in school history!
While this accomplishment means a lot to you, the swim team, and the coaches and parents at Greeley West High School,
it also means a lot to us as well! Winning a state championship requires each team member to showcase commitment,
dedication and a consistent desire to improve; traits we admire in all Weld County residents.
That's why at the end of each high school sports season, we take time to honor the state championship teams in Weld
County by proclaiming a day in the schools' honor and formally congratulating the team on their special accomplishment
during one of our weekly board meetings.
Doing this after the spring season presents a challenge, however, as the conclusion of the season is so close to the end of
the school year. We realize that seniors on the team arc close to graduating and that other team members may have work
or family commitments during the summer making it difficult for them to be in attendance.
We still want to formally recognize the boys swimming and diving team for their championship season at a board
meeting, but to make it easier on the team and allow for the most parents, students and faculty to attend, we've decided to
wait until the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year to do so. At that time, we'd love to invite the team members and
coaches to be recognized with a proclamation proclaiming Greeley West Spartans Day.
Once again, congratulations to the boys swimming and diving team for an outstanding season. We look forward to
formally recognizing their state title victory in the future!
