WELD COUNTY LIBRARY
ANNUAL REPORT
1973
This narrative report is presented as a supplement to the statistics
and is meant only to present those activities of the Weld County Library not
easily portrayed by numerical tables.
One of the busiest areas of the library is the Youth Department. Circulation
records indicate this, but in addition there are programs not entirely reflected
here. During the school year weekly pre-school story hours are held, using
volunteers as "story ladies". Because of space limitations, children must regis-
ter to attend one three-month period. The quota of 45 is filled each time.
A summer reading program offers both readers and pre-schoolers the chance to
attain certificates. In 1973, 1,307 children were registered with 294 reading
enough books to get certificates, and 170 having enough read to them. A total
of 13,054 books were reported read, and 270 attended the final program.
During the year many groups visited the Youth Area for instruction or
information: 542 children and 92 adults. Mrs. Kay, the librarian, also
gave a number of programs to groups outside the library.
The System Area Resource Center operated by Weld County Library also had a
very active year. 3,698 requests were received from public libraries; 2,448 of
them (66.2%) were filled with 2,486 books and 279 duplicated pages. 1,034
requests came from schools; 808 (78%) were filled with 1,103 books and 811
duplicated pages. Of these requests, 1,152 were subject questions, obviously
requiring more staff work than author/title inquiries. The areas of interest
continue to be widespread and often very specialized. •
• For over half of 1973 the bookmobile department has operated under the
handicap of having only one unit. In spite of that the statistics show an
-2-
excellent increase in service. A few Saturday stops have been added, and more
stops are being made in mobile home courts and other adult service areas. There
has been better communication with patrons concerning schedules. A few story
times were added at summer stops in addition to the regular reading program.
A new bookmobile was ordered in the spring, but had not been delivered by
the end of the year. Schedules are ready to give expanded service when it
arrives, and new shopping center stops are planned.
One entirely new service was added in the fall of 1973. This was a paper-
back Mail-A-Book program. 7,500 catalogs were mailed to rural box-holders
throughout the county in September. The response was immediate and enthusiastic.
Within two days the requests began to come in, with the first weeks averaging
at least 100 a day, leveling off to about forty a day. Requests through December
totalled 1,828 with a circulation of 4,445 books. At least 700 families from
all parts of the county have sent in requests. Many users have written to say
how much the availability of these books means to them. Although some who could
reach libraries or a bookmobile are using the mail, the majority of the requests
are coming from those formerly without ready access to library service.
Some attempts were made to offer programs using the library's non-print
resources. Noon film showings and a series of Friday evening Colorado State
Library film programs were offered, but attendance was poor. The video
cassette equipment was used during the summer in the Youth Area and proved
popular with the youngsters. Space is not available to use it all of the time.
Until some sort of a meeting room is available so that programming may be
offered at more suitable times, it seems that further efforts in this area may
not be worth the necessary time.
1 Other staff activities have proceeded as usual with increased tempos in all
areas. Mrs. Adcock and Mrs. Kinnison completed their work as administrators of
the System, with a new librarian arriving January 1, 1974. Mrs. Adcock filled
the first year of her term on the American Library Association Council, attending
both Midwinter and the regular summer convention.
