HomeMy WebLinkAbout20212906.tiffPROCLAMATION NATIONAL FOSSIL DAY OCTOBER 13, 2021 WHEREAS, the Wednesday of the second full week in October every year is designated as National Fossil Day, and WHEREAS, National Fossil Day emphasizes the value of discovering and learning about our collective past through the fossil record, and WHEREAS, Weld County, Colorado, was gifted the first complete Triceratops skull found in the state of Colorado by the family of Roland "Sonny" Mapelli, upon whose Weld County ranch the fossil was found, and WHEREAS, the donation was given with the provision the fossil remain in Weld County on display in a county building for the public to view and enjoy as educational and learning opportunities were of great importance to the Mapelli family, and WHEREAS, the fossil, known as Pops the Triceratops, is currently at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for restoration and scientific study for the first time since the fossil's discovery, and WHEREAS, the Pops the Triceratops project has garnered attention from people of all ages around the world, and as Commissioners, we are proud to continue to share the Pops the Triceratops project and to bring special attention to National Fossil Day. NOW, THERFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that Wednesday, October 13, 2021 be known as National Fossil Day in Weld County and encourages the public to take time to learn about the history of their community and to support organizations that make that history available for the public to enjoy.
