TRAUMA AWARENESS AND INJURY PREVENTION DAY
MAY 12, 2021
WHEREAS, a large portion of Weld County's diverse economy includes industries where
workers are at higher risk for traumatic injury; and
WHEREAS, Weld County transportation outlets include 2,916 miles of roads in the county, two
major railroad corridors and three general aviation airports and the top three causes of injury
in Weld County are falls, motor vehicle collisions and violence -related injuries; and
WHEREAS, traumatic injury is a major public health concern that accounts for the No. 1 cause
of death in the U.S. in people aged 1 to 46 and kills more children than all other causes of
death combined; and traumas may be prevented through education and awareness, and the
burden of injury can be reduced through expert medical care; and
WHEREAS, Greeley is home to northeastern Colorado's only Level 2 trauma center at North
Colorado Medical Center with more than 3,000 medical professionals providing ground and air
transport and emergency, orthopedic, surgical, burn, psychological and rehabilitative care,
delivering trauma education, and serving as the tertiary resource facility for the region; and
WHEREAS, Banner Health Western States Burn Center is the only American Burn Association
verified Burn Center in Northern Colorado to serve Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, North and
South Dakota and Montana.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that
May 12, 2021, be known as Trauma Awareness and Injury Prevention Day, in conjunction with
National Trauma Awareness Month. This is in honor of the Weld County men and women who
work to care for victims of traumatic incidents and who educate the community on the
prevention of, and medical treatment for, traumatic injuries
