Dear Fellow Colorado County Commissioners,
As representatives of the most local form of government, county commissioners are on the front
lines of maintaining our residents' health, safety, and welfare. Each of us takes this task on with
diligence and sincerity, but we do not take it on alone. When it comes to public safety, we rely on
our elected Sheriffs and their peace officers to work within our communities to provide and
maintain a safe environment for our families. Providing peace officers with the tools they need to
succeed is imperative, which is why we urge you and Colorado Counties, Inc. to oppose Senate
Bill 21-062.
Peace officers spend time building relationships with residents in the community to work together
to provide the best outcome for community safety. Removing a peace officer's ability to use their
discretion to resolve a situation occurring within the community puts the entire community at risk.
Senate Bill 21-062 would essentially negate a peace officer's fundamental role within the
community by removing a suspect's arrest as a viable option for many criminal actions. Senate Bill
21-062 would endanger all Coloradans by teaching disregard for the law, and this will encourage
more crime, especially in our urban areas, which will impact our business districts.
For maintaining the safety of our communities and for providing our peace officers with the tools
they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability, we are strongly urging the opposition of Senate
Bill 21-062.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
Steve Moreno, Chair
