HomeMy WebLinkAbout20210615.tiffPROCLAMATION WELD COUNTY RANCHING, LIVESTOCK AND MEAT -IN DAY MARCH 20, 2021 WHEREAS, the importance of farming and ranching in Weld County dates back to the 19th century. Following the 1862 Homestead Act, settlers arrived in Weld County and sought to transform the "Great American Desert" into prime agricultural land and WHEREAS, we are. a Right to farm County and proud of our agricultural heritage and of the more than 4,000 farms in Weld County, 76 are Centennial farms and ranches. These 100 -year enterprises serve as a testament to the determination: and perseverance of families who continue to provide a sustainable and affordable food source to the people of Colorado and the world; and WHEREAS, Weld County ranks #1 in the state ;and #2 in the nation for livestock, poultry and products; and: WHEREAS, cattle and other livestock production has historically been, and continues to be, one of the key economicdrivers in Weld County and brings $1.7 billion to the state economy each year and WHEREAS, this dedication to agriculture, including farming and ranching, has established Weld County as the #1 overall agricultural county in Colorado, and 8th in the nation, with more than $2 billion in total market value of agricultural products sold; and WHEREAS, more than 170,000 jobs in Colorado are related to agribusiness; which contributes more than $40 billion annually to the Colorado economy; and WHEREAS, eating meat supplies the body with essential nutrients in quality and quantity superior to those provided by an all plant -based diet,, including sources of zinc, vitamins 612 and D, and essential fatty acids; and `WHEREAS, this board will not disparage any economic engine that supports the residents of this great state, but it will call out dangerous actions by elected officials that risk the economic health, safety and welfare of the people who call Colorado home, not the least of which are the families who work the land, care for the livestock, plant the crops,, provide the nourishment for our bodies, and preserve the way of life that is crucial to this state's and county's security and success. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners, that in honor of the Weld County men and women who work hard every day to preserve an industry and food security vital ° to the State of Colorado and the nation, that the 20th day of March, 2021, is proclaimed Weld County Ranching, Livestock and Meat -IN Day.
