Ashly December 6, 1974 Weld County Commissioner 9th Avenue and 9th Street Greeley, Colorado 80631 Dear Mr. Ashly: We see in the Greeley Tribune that Weld County is planning to develop a recreational area west of Greeley. We are happy that there is going to be another recreational area, however, we would like to question the advisa- bility of developing a camping area in the recreational area. Weld County has several privately-owned campsites in operation now which have been able to meet the demands of the public. We at Scotty's Camp have never turned anyone a'vay who wanted to stay. Scotty's Camp is located just east of Greeley and another campsite has been zoned west of Greeley. There was a time when the people who wanted to camp could not find a place to camp because there weren't enough campers to warrant the investment of private capital. Now that there are more people camping , private capital is trying to provide adequate accommodations for them. The owners of the two camping sites close to Greeley have spent thousands of dollars to develop their properties. (We at Scotty's Camp have invested much more than the 460,000.00 which you propose to use to develop the atlas missile Site Park. ) We feel that those who want to camp should be able to finance their camping activities and not depend on the tax dollars or the county and nation to finance their camping. We are also wondering who is going to keep the area free from litter, haul off the trash and police the area? The private campground owners find this a full time job. This service is paid for by fees. +e also are required to pay taxes out or these fees. Does the county intend to collect fees and meet the same standards that the private campground owners are required to meet': In closing, may we point out that if the county is going into the business of providing overnight accommodations for the public that it is discrimin- ating against the portion of the public which prefers motels and hotels to camping, and that to be fair to all the public the county should also go into the motel and hotel. business?
