MEAD MAVERICKS DAY
WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 2021
WHEREAS, the Mead Mavericks boys basketball team played the Montrose Indians in the Class 4A state
championship on Sunday, March 21, at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs; and
WHEREAS, Mead jumped out to an early lead and maintained a consistent offensive attack throughout
the game. Junior guard Eijah Knudsen recorded a game -high 30 points, while senior guard Marcus
Santiago added 18; and
WHEREAS, juniors Nathan Hoffman, James Shiers, Will Tenore and Corby Tecu each added four points,
junior Matt Murphy scored two and sophomore Aiden Herrera scored two to push past Montrose 68-44;
and
WHEREAS, the win was a reward for the challenges the team has gone through over the past year.
After the pandemic brought a premature close to the team's Final Four run last season; and
WHEREAS, the Mavericks never lost sight of their goal, and they played inspired basketball for their
teammates, Mead High School and the entire Mead community. The win over Montrose allowed seniors
Marcus Santiago and Jason Pelzel to end their Maverick careers by bringing home the first boys
basketball state championship since 1957.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that
Wednesday, May 5, 2021, be known as Mead Mavericks Day, in honor of the teamwork, perseverance
and hard work shown by players coaches and parents in accomplishing the goal of winning a state
championship.
