many different types of weather in the spring and summer including tornadoes, thunder and lightning
storms, hail, flooding, open grass fires, high winds and more; and
WHEREAS, one doesn't have to look far to see how weather has played a role in our county's history. From
1965 to 2021, 19 disaster declarations have been made for Weld County. Regardless of the specific weather
event that resides in someone's memory, certain ones, like the 2013 flood, 2008 Windsor Tornado and last
year's EF-2 landspout tornado near Firestone, serve as lasting examples of how weather can be a
tremendous disruption in our lives; and
WHEREAS, while our residents aren't immune to the risks severe weather poses, it's important to
remember that preparation, along with knowledge of what to do when severe weather strikes, can be a
great asset to residents when they need to make critical decisions to keep themselves, their families and
their property safe; and
WHEREAS, giving residents the tools they need to make those decisions that best suit their needs has long
been a goal of Weld County Government and our Office of Emergency Management. Additionally, every
year, OEM coordinates or attends around 600 hours of trainings with municipalities and first responder

WHEREAS, Colorado Severe Weather Awareness Week provides an opportunity for residents to consider
the •types of weather events that may impact themselves, their families or their businesses and become
better prepared to respond appropriately if and when one occurs. Our residents are well-known for being
resilient, and time spent this week preparing for, or becoming more familiar with, severe weather can only
strengthen that perception.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that April 10-16,

becoming more weather -ready by reviewing severe weather information available on our Facebook and
Twitter pages and at www.weldoem.com and reviewing or establishing plans to stay safe in severe weather
emergencies.
