BOX 758 GREELEY, CO 80632 Steve Longwell Eaton High School Athletic Director 211 1st Street Eaton, CO 80615 Dear Mr. Longwell, The Weld County Board of Commissioners wishes to congratulate coach Todd Hernandez and the Eaton Reds baseball team on winning the Class 3A state championship with a 10-4 victory over the University Bulldogs on June 4! Beyond talent, winning a state championship requires players, coaches and parents to exemplify several traits we admire in all Weld County residents: Hard work, teamwork, determination and the ability to overcome adversity in pursuit of a goal. As time moves on, several memories about this special season will remain in the minds of everyone involved in Eaton's success. Close victories throughout the year that garnered the Reds a 28-2 record; the stellar performance of junior Tate Smith in the state championship game where he struck out 12 and gave up only two runs in a complete -game effort; the offensive firepower of the Reds offense led by Smith, junior Walker Martin and sophomore Gunnar Duncan, who each had RBIs in the 10-4 victory; or the fact that this year's state championship adds an impressive 13th state baseball title to Eaton's trophy case. While we celebrate the success of our young people, we encourage players to never forget the special feeling of being called champions or the work that was required to earn that designation. Just as the characteristics mentioned above were critical to winning a state championship, they can be utilized again to achieve future goals in life. To the parents and coaches: Thank you for the commitment made to your kids throughout the year. Your support and sacrifice are what enabled them to achieve one of hopefully many special moments in their lives as they transition from high school students to future leaders of their families and communities. Traditionally, we honor every Weld County state championship team with a proclamation in the school's honor. Doing this in the spring presents a challenge, however, as the end of the season is so close to the end of the school year. Senior's graduate, and other team members may have work or family commitments during the summer making it difficult for the team to be in attendance. Delaying a recognition until the next school year isn't a good option either, as seniors on the team have started new chapters in their lives and are generally unable to attend a board meeting to be formally recognized. Please accept this letter as the board's formal congratulations on a remarkable season and a memorable accomplishment. We share in the celebration of the entire Eaton High School community and wish players, coaches and parents continued succ s in the future! Si'`erely, Scott K.
