DON ES NAMED 2021 ASSESSOR OF THE YEAR
WELD COUNTY, CO — In recognition of both consistent professionalism and
strong leadership, Weld County Assessor Brenda Dones has been named the
2021 Colorado Assessor of the Year by the Colorado Assessors' Association. The
award, voted on by association members from throughout the state, was
presented to Dones at the association's 2021 winter conference on Wednesday,
December 8 in Colorado Springs.
"This award is a clear reflection of Brenda's commitment to her constituents,
and the extraordinary respect she has within the Colorado Assessors'
Association," said Douglas County Assessor and association president Lisa Frizell.
"Brenda is a leader in our organization, in part, because she so capably mentors
other Colorado Assessors. She is always willing to share her knowledge and
experience based on her many years of public service."
Dones, who joined the Assessor's Office as a senior analyst in 1999 before serving
as the Chief Deputy Assessor from 2007 to 2018 and ultimately being elected
Assessor in 2019, was commended by her peers for her steadfast service in many
different roles and credited for raising the bar for all working to serve the public. The achievements that made
her a clear choice for the award highlight both professional ability and strong personal traits. Some of those
achievements include:
• Taking the lead on determining appropriate COVID-related adjustments for business personal property
valuation.
• Working collaboratively with neighboring counties to address regional challenges as well as identifying
state legislation that could affect assessors throughout the state and testifying before legislative
committees on their behalf.
• Working to continually provide innovative solutions to the challenges of oil and gas valuation. Beyond
matters related to oil and gas, Dones is also seen as a leader on many other assessment issues and
someone with a tremendous amount of character and integrity to accompany a strong work ethic.
The recognition of Dones as Assessor of the Year continues a standard of excellence for the Weld County
Assessor's Office. Former Weld County Assessor Chris Woodruff took home Assessor of the Year honors in 2018.
