Thanks for sending me the map of the proposed sand and gravel mining operation. My wife Christine and I own the 258 acre property just north immediately bordering the HS Land & Cattle LLC property. For the past 16 years I have managed my property (I call it the Greenhead Ranch) as game refuge. I do not allow turkey or deer hunting on the ranch and only very sparingly duck hunt with friends and family. With the encroachment of oil and gas activity north and west, Greeley/Evans encroaching from the north and "'liken's subdivisions creeping in from the west I provide the only safe haven for miles up and down along the Dr for the Turkeys, Deer, ducks, geese, raccoons, mink, muskrats, beavers, coyotes, Owls, Hawks, Eagles and numerous other avian and mammalian critters.... Even an occasional mountain lion has been known to be stealthing about. 1 It saddens me to see that HS Land & Cattle LLC has chosen to develop a sand and gravel mining operation on what has been a beautiful family farm and ranch operation for many generations. Doty Phelps (the former owner) must be spinning in her grave at the mere thought of it. I also can't believe that Weld County is considering this type of industrial activity so close along the South Platte River corridor. This type of unnatura activity will no doubt disturb the existing creatures normal order of things far beyond the surveyed boundaries. of their proposed operations. The noise alone that will be generated by the trucks and other heavy machinery no doubt will be enough to chase off the thousands of waterfowl that use the mid river sand bars as a rest and roosting area during their spring and fall migrations. First and foremost however, the northernmost proposed pit designated as cell #4 is located less than 1300 feet from an active bald eagle nest. This mating pair has raised a couple of eaglets almost every year for the past 5 or six nesting seasons in their home in a tall cottonwood tree on Greenhead Ranch property on the south bank of the river bordering (within about a hundred feet) the HS LLC property line. I have enclosed a google map of the area in question with a rough sketch of the property boundaries, the location of the proposed new pit and the nesting site itself. I believe the State of Colorado regulations state: "No permitted, authorized, or human encroachment activities within a 1/2 mile radius of active nest sites from December 1 through July 31". I'm quite sure that Federal regulations also contain similar language. I am aware that the Colorado Department of Parks and Wildlife has also commented to you about this Situation. I certainly hope that the Weld County Planning Commission will seriously consider my comments when preparing your recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners. Thank you very much for the opportunity to register my opposition to this proposed Sand and Gravel surface mining operation.
