ANDREW ALIREZ DAY
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 2023
WHEREAS, University of Northern Colorado wrestler Andrew Alirez competed at the 2023 NCAA
Division I Wrestling Championships March 16 through 18 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and
WHEREAS, entering with an undefeated record on the season, Alirez turned in not only a
championship performance but a historic one as well, defeating Iowa's Real Woods 6-4 to win a
national championship at 141 pounds; and
WHEREAS, the victory symbolizes much more than personal athletic excellence. It is the first
championship won by a UNC wrestler since the school transitioned from Division II to Division I
athletics — a tremendous accomplishment that young people and future athletes can use as
motivation when striving for success in their own pursuits; and
WHEREAS, as impressed as we are by the athletic and academic achievements of Weld County
residents, we love to see the traits used by individuals to garner such positive results. Throughout
his high school wrestling career at Greeley Central and now as a collegiate wrestler at UNC, Alirez
has shown tremendous determination in pursuit of goals along with humility and grace. We proud
of his accomplishments and the way he's represented UNC and Weld County as a leader, Big 12
Wrestler of the Year and national champion.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that the
5th day of April 2023, be known as Andrew Alirez Day. We join UNC and all of Weld County in
celebrating his national championship!
