NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2023
WHEREAS, no two emergencies may be the same, but preparedness is a common
denominator that can keep people safe and allow them to protect themselves, their families,
their pets and their property; and
WHEREAS, National Preparedness Month is part of a national effort to encourage residents
to set aside time in September to establish or update evacuation plans and create
preparedness kits, which can keep people comfortable for up to 72 hours following an
emergency; and
WHEREAS, while it's important all for residents to take part in National Preparedness
Month, we join ready.gov in its initiative to stress the importance of emergency planning
among older adults. Much of this preparation centers around knowledge of common
disasters, identifying where emergency shelters are in a community and taking advantage
of tools like weather radios or signing up for CodeRED to stay situationally aware; and
WHEREAS, we encourage residents to check out the many resources available to them to
help make the seemingly large task of preparedness more achievable. Preparedness tips
can be found at www.ready.aov, www.weldoem.com or by viewing our 12 Months of
Emergency Preparedness Tips flyers at www.weld.gov/go/pio.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners
that September 2023 be known as National Preparedness Month. Emergencies are
disruptive and can happen at any time. However, preparedness can enable residents to
have peace of mind in times of uncertainty, which can help create a more resilient county
overall.
