Box 1167 Telephone (303)353-6415 LARRY A. LITTLEFIELD District Attorney Greeley, Colorado 80631 DANIEL S. MAUS ROBERT E. RAY April 6 , 1972 Weld County Commissioners Weld County Courthouse Greeley , Colorado 80631 Dear Commissioners : The following are my recommendations regarding the District Attorney ' s Office based upon the study by NHPQ o£ Weld County Governmental Services . On page 76 of that report , a concept drawing relating to my office is contained thereon. I notice that the idea provides for three two-man offices . I am totally against two-man offices in the District Attorney ' s Office because it is impractical and inconvenient for two men to share one office due to the nature of the work which our office does . Most of our conferences with people are confidential and some of them are very unpleasant and personal and I do not believe that two attorneys should share those experiences with a client and I do not think two clients ought to share each others ' experience while in the same office . Therefore , I would unequivocably be against two-man offices in a new District Attorney' s Office . The offices should be for one lawyer individually . I also notice that space is provided for six deputies and one investigator. As you know, last year our office handled over 2500 cases and that there is a very good possibility that we will be needing an additional deputy this coming year. That would make a total of five deputies before construction begins . Simply providing for six deputies does not appear to contemplate the future needs to the extent necessary . I further notice that the chart for future employees indicates ten employees in ten years and I do not believe it is realistic to now only plan on six deputies , three secretaries , and one investigator. My recommendation would be to plan on at least eight deputies , not that we will need that many within the next five to ten years , in addition to three secretaries and two investigators for a total of thirteen employees . 720597 Weld County Commissioners Page 2 April 6 , 1972 Additionally , as you know, we have one full-time investigator and one part-time investigator presently , with a hope that the part-time investigator will become a full-time investigator. Therefore , planning on only one investigators ' office is unrealistic even now and will become more so in the future . I therefore would suggest that minimally , provisions be made for two investigators in the District Attorney ' s Office . Furthermore , the prospective square footage of the new District Attorney' s Office is projected at 3 ,000 square feet . The office space that we presently occupy is approximately 2700 square feet (I draw your attention to page 57 of the report) and the projected need in ten years is 4800 square feet . Therefore , if we are going to adequately plan for the future , it seems most near sighted to plan only 300 more square feet than we presently have . Certainly we will need at least 3500 to 4 ,000 square feet if we are to employ the recommendations set out above for additional deputies and investigators . Other than these recommendations , I believe that the plan is a good one and that something should be done very soon in order to remedy a good number of the problems presently existing. If you wish any further explanation o£ these recommendations , please feel free to call on me . Sincerely yours , R e r (' — t N. Miller District Attorney RNM:mk Hello
