Dear SSHRC Adjudication Committee,
On behalf of Weld County Public Works — Weed Division, we are writing to express support for the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Grant — Stage One
proposal that Dr. Jeremy Pittman from the University of Waterloo's School of Planning is leading. The
project aims to advance social science in support of grassland conservation in North America, and the
team is comprised of numerous researchers working on relevant issues throughout the region. We
agree in principle with the goals and objectives of the project and our role as outlined in the
application, and we are willing to participate in the development of a Stage Two application if the
project is successful in Stage One.
This project represents a multitude of concepts that align with my division. This includes determining
the enablers and barriers to conservation practices which includes increasing the protection of existing
grasslands and the species that rely on the grasslands while determining a sustainable land
management operation that may include restoration. Having this data will aid the Weed Division staff
with more education and information that they can pass on to landowners as well as help the Public
Works Department with restoration practices for County owned lands. As part of this project, the
Weed Division Supervisor and staff will be providing targeted expertise related to grassland
conservation including noxious weed identification, impacts, control options and best seeding practices
as they are currently understood.
If funded, Weld County Public Works — Weed Division expects to provide a total of $12,000 in in -kind
support through our involvement in the project at 40 hours per year times 5 years at $60 per hour.
We look forward to contributing to the project's success and to strengthening our partnership with the
University of Waterloo.
