PASS -AROUND REVIEW
PASS -AROUND TITLE: Unused Equipment
DEPARTMENT: Public Health & Environment
PERSON REQUESTING: Jason Chessher, Executive Director
DATE:5/27/2025
Brief description of the problem/issue:
The laboratory has some equipment that is obsolete but still on the inventory list.
1. The lab originally used a microscope for medical testing, so it was made obsolete when the medical
portion of the lab closed in 2020. Asset #05450129
2. A purifier hood was used for medical testing, so it was also made obsolete when the medical lab closed
in 2020. Asset #05450133
3. The chemistry lab used a Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) for metals
analysis, but it has been replaced with an ICP-MS. The ICP-MS can analyze most metals on the periodic
table concurrently, while the GFAA could only measure one element at a time. Asset #05450151
What options exist for the Board?
1. Retain the equipment.
2. Remove the equipment from inventory and:
a. donate the equipment to a local school or
b. sell the equipment. The price online is listed around $1000-$2000 for the microscope, around
$1700 for the purifier hood, and around $8000 for the GFAA.
Recommendation:
I recommend removing the equipment from inventory, donating the microscope to Thompson Valley High School
and selling the purifier hood and GFAA.

Absolutely! Do you want it mailed or emailed? What would work best? When do you need it by?
Thanks again,

Thompson Valley would love it, if it's still up for grabs!

Hi all,
I have one more item for you all to potentially take as donation, but it comes with a caveat: We have an Olympus
BH-2 microscope that we'd like to get rid of (pictures attached). It's currently on our inventory list, unlike the
other lab items, so it will require the Board of County Commissioners' Approval to donate (rather than selling or
keeping). In order to get approval, I must create a memo for the board, and that memo must include who would
be willing to accept a donation if we choose the donation route. If you are interested in this microscope, would
you please write a letter from your school saying you would accept and appreciate the donation? The letter
should list the microscope make and model (Olympus BH-2), your name, and the school address - a letterhead
would work well for this.
I'm totally fine with you initially just saying you're interested, then getting the letter afterwards. If you can give a
timeline for when I could get a letter from you, that would be helpful. Like before, this is first come first served.
Thanks,
Katrina Alsum

Hi all,
Since you had replied but not received anything, I wanted to ask about one more item we found:
2
i
The front says it's a Fiber-Lite MI -150 high intensity illuminator. I asked another teacher about it, but they didn't
want it after researching what it was for — he said, "it is used for experiments that you want uniform illumination
fora particular experiment. Probably for growing photosynthetic organisms or some other experiments that you
would want uniform light all around the samples." Would any of you be interested in this? Like before, it'll be first
come, first serve.
Thanks,
