HomeMy WebLinkAbout20250272.tiffPROCLAMATION SUPPORT FOR WELD COUNTY EGG PRODUCERS AND COLORADO AGRICULTURE MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2025 WHEREAS, Weld County is the most productive agricultural county in Colorado, and one of the most productive in the United States, in total market value of agricultural products WHEREAS, Weld County is a right -to -farm county, meaning Weld County's land -use policies support a high -quality rural character, which respects the agricultural heritage and traditional agricultural land uses of the county; and WHEREAS, rural character in the county includes those uses which provide rural lifestyles and rural -based economies; and WHEREAS, according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture, Weld County ranks first in the state in poultry and eggs; and WHEREAS, feeding the -state with local, responsibly -sourced food is crucial for Colorado families who are struggling to pay for the most basic of groceries; and WHEREAS, House Bill 20-1343 regarding confinement standards for egg -laying hens whose eggs are sold has had a profoundly negative impact on Colorado families as this bill, along with the impact of Avian Bird Flu, has pushed the price of eggs to record high NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED by the Board of Weld County Commissioners that the board supports'.HB 25-1074, sponsored by Weld County Representative Ryan Gonzalez and Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer, which will repeal the confinement standards for egg -laying hens, and will allow our agriculture producers do what they do best — raise our food responsibly and humanely — as they know better than government on how to do so.
