HomeMy WebLinkAbout730648.tiff June 19, 1973 Board of County Commissioners Weld County Greeley, CO 80631 Dear Sirs: Thank you for your time and consideration concerning the land use permit that Jim E. Miller applied for and recieved May 29. I have a few questions (and comments) I would like to have answered. First of all, as I recall, the vote was 19 for and 19 against the proposal. The 19 people that were against the issuing of the permit were all residents within a 2 mile radius of the property in question. The people that were for the issuing of the permit lived several miles away and is one case, another county. Therefore, I feel the "vote" was really a waste of your time and ours. It looks to me like, only the people against a proposal must live in the immediate area while those supporting a proposal can make their wishes known no matter where they live. Is this the case? Do petitions really do any good? We had many signatures of landowners on the petitions that we turned in to you on May 29. Evidently it really didn't mean a thing that we all were opposed to the location of this feed lot. We are not opposed to feeding cattle, we only felt another location would be much more suitable, since the area in question is rapidly (or was) growing into a very nice residential area. I would very much like to Know your reasoning for the decision you made. If I don't hear from you in the immediate future, I will assume there is no logical explanation for your decision. Sincerely, Mrs. Wggyne Burke Rte. 1, Box 98 La Salle, CO 80645 PL0747 730648 1I I. OFFICE OF BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PHONE(3031 353-2212 EXT.221,222& 223 P.O. BOX 758 GREELEY,COLORADO 80631 ingik COLORADO June 21, 1973 Mrs . Wayne Burke Route 1 Box 98 La Salle Colorado 80645 Dear Mrs . Burke, Today I received your letter regarding the Miller feedlot . Even though there were 19 people here opposing the granting of the permit there were a number from the area who had previously contacted us saying they were in favor of the permit being granted. In studying the petitions we noted that a number of those people signing the petition lived as far away as five miles or further from the feedlot site . Petitions do mean something to this Board, but only when people live within the immediate area. If they do not, their vote, whether for or against, carries no weight with this Board. Farming, livestock and cattle feeding is the backbone of this.,County. If you would prefer Weld County to become a bedroom County you would have to accept a tax base that no Weld County resident could afford. The location of this feedlot or any feedlot in Weld County is going to have to be in outlying areas away from municipalities . A feedlot in your area is an asset to those people who make their living off the land because of the great need for the crops that are grown there . It is also the feeling of this Board that those people who desire the comforts of urban living must accept urban problems in the urban areas or the "agricultural problems" of the rural areas . Weld County will remain agricultural in our lifetimes and may always be so and unless we provide for the growth of agriculture we would be defeating the purpose of the existence of this County as the nation' s number two County in agricultural production and the world's number one County in beef production. I hope my reasons have been logical as you requested. I make my decisions on what's best for the entire County, not for an individual or individual groups . If you feel our decision was wrong, I respect WELD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HARRY S.ASHLEY GLENN K. BILLINGS ROY MOSER your opinion and appreciate your letter . Please do not hesitate to call or write if I may be of any assistance to you, Mrs . Burke . Sincerely, Glenn K. Billings , Chairman Board of Weld County Commissioners GKB/ck Hello
