KINSHIP CARE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2024
WHEREAS, Weld County is steadfast in their commitment to promoting the safety and well-being of our
children, including providing a stable household in which children and youth can be nurtured and succeed;
WHEREAS, in 2023, nationally 35% of children/youth, in Colorado 50% children/youth, in Weld County
63% children/youth involved with the child welfare system are placed with kinship caregivers. This is the
first time Colorado's child welfare system has hit this milestone, and Weld County continues to lead the state
in kinship placements. This marks an important emphasis in practice, providing assurances that children and
youth will remain in family like settings whenever possible; and
WHEREAS, all children and youth deserve a safe and secure place to live, and kinship caregiver services
are an important permanency option for children as it minimizes trauma and loss; and
WHEREAS, individuals and families caring for a relative's or close family friend's child make numerous
personal and financial sacrifices to support children in need; and
WHEREAS, children and youth are fifty seven percent more likely to be reunified with a parent when they
are being cared for by a kinship caregiver; and
WHEREAS, a kin -first culture is in alignment with Weld County's values and is committed to examining
existing policies, programs, and services through an equity -focused lens; and
WHEREAS, Kinship Care Month provides an opportunity to showcase the accomplishments of countless
youth throughout Weld County who, with the unconditional support of grandparents and other relatives,
have successfully navigated the emotional difficulties of separation from their parents.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Weld County Commissioners, that September
2024 be known as Kinship Care Month and encourage all Weld County citizens to raise their awareness and
understanding of the positive family environment that kinship families offer for many children.
