Barker, Esq. Weld County Attorney P.O. Box 758 1150 O Street Greeley, CO 80632 Via Email: bbarker@weld.gov Dear Mr. Barker: This letter is to notify you that the city has voided the demolition permit approved for the property at 825-27 7th Street, George's Bike Shop. Section 24-1003.e.5 of the Greeley Municipal Code provides legal protection for a potential historic property or district which has been nominated but not yet designated for 120 days or until its status is determined, whichever is sooner. This protection provides a moratorium on building permits issued for those properties to allow for the property to go through the designation process. While the permit had been approved, the permit fee had not been paid and therefore the permit was never issued. The Greeley Historic Register nomination of 825 & 827 7th Street on August 28, 2024 caused the moratorium to go into effect automatically. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call me at 970-350-9222 or email me at betsy.kellums@greeleygov.com. We acknowledge that, through a crack in the demolition notification process spelled out in City code, this effort might be too late. The property has been acquired by Weld County government, and the demolition permit has been issued — nevertheless, as a preservation advocacy organization, we object to the demolition of yet another downtown historic building — one that for decades had escaped the destruction that befell the other structures around it. But George's significance extends beyond its historic building. For many, the iconic mural on its west side came to define the rebirth of downtown in the early 2000s as Albert Einstein's massive visage spoke to the themes of creativity and knowledge. And when in 2020, the mural was refreshed to embrace opportunity, the businesspeople of downtown took heart that the difficulties of the pandemic would be overcome. George's is hardly the most architecturally significant structure in downtown Greeley. But the potential it has for redevelopment is strong, and its legacy as a hometown bike shop lingers with generations of Greeley kids. And lastly, how many times must we see a beloved downtown structure meet the wrecking ball in favor of a few more parking spaces? Not Einstein, but another genius cautioned: those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. We exhort the leaders in Greeley and Weld County — don't demolish our history — learn from it. And please work to save this important Greeley landmark. The Board of Directors Historic Greeley Hello
