Gabri Vergara, Consumer Protection Manager, Weld County Department of Public Health and
environment presented a slideshow on Radon.
Radon is a cancer -causing, radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium, it is found in
rock, soils, and water all over the world and it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Some of the
reasons why we should be concerned are that Radon contained in the air you breath can cause lung
cancer; it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States about 21,000 deaths per
year.
Radon gets into a home moving up thought the ground and moves into your home through cracks and
other hole in the foundation.
Testing for radon first using a short-term test, second if result is 4 pCi/L or higher, test again to
confirm results, third fix your home if needed. It is important to know that even if you find out that
radon levels are high, this problem can be solved.
Some of the things Weld County is doing are Outreach and education, offering free radon test kits to
Weld County residents, updated building code to include Appendix F (of the IRC) to all new
residential building permits in incorporated Weld County.
