To Whom It May Concem:
It has been brought to my attention by a parent, Dr. Gerald Calvin, that we have a potenitally
hazardous situation on WCR 22, between WCR 31 and HWY. 85 . This road is used by oil trucks
and there are no speed reduction signs going east or west on WCR 22 from WCR 31, except that
there is a speed reduction to 25 M.P.H. going west on WCR 22, just before the rail road tracks.
Dr. Calvin lives at the crest of the hill and is concerned that the oil trucks won't be able to stop
going east or west on WCR 22, when the bus is stopped and picking up students, because they are
traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver also has two other stops east of the Calvin
residence.
We have discussed this area before and you did put up a sign, depicting a school bus stop ahead,
going east on WCR 22 before the crest of the hill but at the time, we did not request that the
signs be posted going west on WCR 22 before 146275 WCR 22. There are three stops in this
area. Is there a sign that says "Bus Stop Ahead Reduce Speed to 25 M.P.H."?
Please feel free to contact me at (303) 857-2761, or at 785-6210. I will be out of the office
from May 27 through May 31, 1996.

Dear Jinny:
This letter is a follow-up of our telephone conversation regarding "school bus stop ahead"signs on WCR 22 east of US Highway 85.
As required by State Law, Weld County performs traffic signing in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Attached is a copy of Section 7B-11, "School Bus Stop Ahead"Signs. As you can see, this sign is to be placed only when a stopped school
bus is not visible for 500 feet. The existing sign west of the crest of the hill by Dr.Calvin's property is appropriate. However, there is
adequate visibility from the east. There is also adequate visibility at the other locations indicated in your letter. Therefore,we will not
place any additional"school bus stop ahead" signs.
Speed reductions are not appropriate at locations where something occurs for a short period of time, such as a stopped school bus. A speed
advisory sign may be appropriate on a"warning"sign for a sharp curve that is a permanent part of the roadway.
It may be appropriate to discuss speeding problems with the Sheriffs's Office. They have been having good luck with new techniques
in community policing. The residents in this area may discuss the issue with Ed Haffner at the Weld County Sheriffs Office. He is
responsible for your area and can be reached at 356-4015 Ext.4097. I will forward a copy of our letters to him.
Sincerely,
Drew Scheltinga

7B-10 School Crossing Sign (S2-1)
The School Crossing sign is intended for use at established crossings
including signalized locations used by pupils going to and from school,
except that at crossings controlled by stop signs, the sign should be
omitted. Only crossings adjacent to schools and those on established
school pedestrian routes shall be signed. When used, the sign shall be
erected at the crosswalk, or at the minimum distance possible in advance
of the crosswalk. The sign shall have a minimum height and width of 36
inches in rural areas, and 30 inches in urban areas.
A School Advance sign (sec. 7B-9) shall be used in advance of every
School Crossing sign.
7B-11 School Bus Stop Ahead Sign (S3-1)
The School Bus Stop Ahead sign is intended for use in advance of
locations where a school bus, when stopped to pick up or discharge
passengers, is not visible for a distance of 500 feet in advance. It shall have
a minimum 30" x 30" size.
It is not intended that these signs be used everywhere a school bus stops
to pick up or discharge passengers but for use only where terrain and
roadway features limit the approach sight distance and where there is no
opportunity to relocate the stop to another location with adequate
visibility.
